I have long wanted to see this again, so was delighted to see it on You Tube to buy for £2.99.
Every bit as good as I remembered, with Alison Steadman as a superb Beverly, and Janine Duvitski as an excellent Ange.

It's brilliant and hilarious until the last moments .
The casting is spot on and I know someone just like Alison Steadman's character .

MissAdventure Wed 08-Jan-25 17:58:37

Are he and Alison Steadman a real life couple, or have I made that up?
I should Google it, I suppose.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Jan-25 17:55:22

Have you watched any of Mike Leigh' other stuff?
They're all quite dark, and toe curling.

Oreo Wed 08-Jan-25 15:28:29

Yes, Abigail is the teenager who’s having a party a few doors away, I think Sue is the Mum at Bev’s cheese and wine do?
Bev is awful and Ange is cringeworthy.I only saw this about ten years ago, it was brilliant in its toe curling way.😁

Kate1949 Wed 08-Jan-25 14:59:53

She's called Beverley, not Abigail.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 07-Jan-25 20:52:11

It’s toe curling really isn’t it? You just feel so embarrassed for Abigail. Man mad, sneers at her husband, unhappy, thinks she’s god’s gift. A mess really.

Kandinsky

Have it on DVD & watch it every so often.
Still makes me smile.

Me too!

Seen it not if!

I remember seeing it when it was first aired and talking about it with people at work for days! Was so clever at the time, and have seen if a few times since.

The Royal Exchange in Manchester will be showing a stage production in April/May!
Always well worth a visit

Oh really!

kittylester Tue 07-Jan-25 20:08:34

We've seen it on stage a couple of times - it's brilliant.

I saw it when it was first on tv. I lived in a student house at the time and we all thought it was fantastic, it was all we could talk about for days. I've watched it several times since and still feel that slight thrill of something a bit edgy and different.

Grandmabatty Tue 07-Jan-25 17:20:41

It was definitely dark humour mixed with harsh realism and a pointed look at suburbia. Fantastic acting and a really interesting plot. I enjoyed it immensely

Mt61 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:35:31

Oh loved that play, great acting. I would to see it on the stage 😊

Pippa22 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:04:25

From some of your remarks I hardly recognise what I remember from Abigail’s Party that I saw back in the day and also recently.
I found it really dark and quite upsetting. Yes some was funny but there is an undercurrent to it that I found disturbing.

Grantanow Tue 07-Jan-25 14:06:20

A good play that looks below the surface of suburban life.

Ellie Anne Mon 06-Jan-25 21:28:29

I’ve seen it a couple of times and really enjoyed it.

Oldbat1 Mon 06-Jan-25 21:21:22

Oh yes it was a great watch all those years ago.

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 19:20:46

I absolutely love the woman who plays Ange. smile
The whole thing is excruciatingly funny.

When I saw the original i didn't like it, wonder if i would now.

Pittcity Mon 06-Jan-25 18:52:21

I saw this on stage locally a couple of months ago.
Preferred Jose Feliciano to Demis Roussos.
