Silent Witness - time to retire this

Am I alone in thinking Silent Witness is stretching believability to the limit? I have watched this since the early days and always loved it but the current stories and cast just leave me cold.

Why can’t program makers know when it’s time to call it a day 🤷‍♀️

I’ve always enjoyed it. I’m catching up on the latest series but have to admit that in episode 1/2 in parts I ‘listened’ rather than watched from behind a cushion. Watching alone in the dark is probably not a good idea. 😂. Sometimes these series are milked for all they’re worth. Perhaps time to call a halt?
As for there not being much to watch on TV, I have a huge list of must watches! There’s a huge choice available.

I have watched it from the beginning . I agree it’s a bit far fetched now but I really enjoy it. I prefer Nikki to the first pathologist ( can’t remember her name, never really took to her as an actress)

Emilia Fox was at Uni with my eldest daughter

I don’t think it’s as good as it used to be. Too far fetched but I still watch it hoping it will improve.

I haven’t see the latest series as DH and I have only quite recently started watching the back series’ on IPlayer. I agree that one has to suspend belief but we enjoy it. What makes us laugh though is how Emilia Fox away goes off on her own into dangerous situations. It reminds me of the old Hammer House of Horror films when the young woman always went down to the cellar in the middle of the night, wearing just a negligee and, guess what, there was the vampire!

I have watched all of these and enjoyed most of them and I still suspend my disbelief and quite like it despite all the above -mentioned poetic licence distortions. No they wouldn't be doing the police's job with them/for them? Jack and Nikki atre completely unbelievable as a couple I think.
Shame we lost Velvy and Jack's lovely deaf niece? but the scene moves on.
The latest plots are a bit bonkers , too. When will the Silent Witness be completely silenced , I wonder.
Does Emilia Fox ever do anything else ?

It is beyond belief, the pathology element has disappeared. Tim is to take it down now.

I used to enjoy it in its early days with Amanda Burton as the lead, but I found it became utterly ridiculous and unbelievable as time went on. The pathologists became police in their own right, sitting in on interviews, chasing suspects and so on. Totally unbelievable and not at all what pathologists do in reality. For these reasons, I ceased watching it a long time ago. I can suspend reality up to a point, but this has become totally unrealistic nonsense.

I enjoy it. It’s meant to be entertainment not factual or believable. Like all series, some storylines are better than others but l think the characters are interesting.

Schnackie2 Sat 01-Feb-25 11:56:34

Oddly enough, although I was always aware of the show, I never watched until last year and now I'm hooked! It's clearly not in the realm of reality regarding police procedures, but it's very good entertainment. Perhaps being a (retired) nurse, the autopsies and gore don't bother me at all.

Susieq62 Sat 01-Feb-25 12:20:45

I like it but felt the last two episodes were very far fetched and Emilia Fox is annoying me with her one dimension look.

Cossy Sat 01-Feb-25 12:20:54

I still enjoy it, it’s completely implausible most of the time, but I like the entertainment value.

I’ve watched it since inception when Amanda Burton was in it.

I was sad when Harry left!

I also enjoyed the very naughty French and Saunders Witless Silence grin

It has always been beyond believable as those doing the post mortems would not be involved in the criminal investigations in this way - but I accept that conceit and just enjoy it for what it is. I am OK with it.

It seems that Forensic Pathologists do actually work alongside Police in determine what, and sometimes who, caused the death of the victim.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this series and think it better than the last. No it’s not factual/realistic, that would probably be boring to watch. It’s unrealistic because it isn’t real. It’s a drama made for entertainment.

KathleenE Sat 01-Feb-25 13:17:29

I found I couldn't follow episodes 3 and 4 - too much switching from past to present and a complex storyline- or perhaps I'm just not very bright!

rocketship Sat 01-Feb-25 13:19:47

I always enjoy this mystery drama.

It's sooo much better than the USA shlock/garbage we get on our tv's here in Canada.

Well yes, they will go out to a scene, then carry out a post mortem and liaise with the police but don't do the police's work for them.

Same here - it's a tv drama, pure fiction, I get enough realism on the news. I actually thought this series was stronger although I do think they could have kept Velvy!

Velvy worried me!

Also - how easy is it to get a job at the Lyall? You just tag along at a SOC investigation, keep turning up, and suddenly you've got your own office!

PamQS Sat 01-Feb-25 13:26:25

Someone asked, above:

"What on earth does Nikki see in Jack??

His muscles?

I enjoy it and think the new cast are perfect.

sweetcakes Sat 01-Feb-25 13:27:45

At the end of the day if you don't like it don't watch it nobody is twisting your arm. I like it and will continue to watch it.

(Messed up code. Apologies)

Suzyf Sat 01-Feb-25 13:45:30

I think it’s good entertainment. We enjoy watching still.

GrauntyHelen Sat 01-Feb-25 13:49:21

I've not enjoyed this series

mokryna Sat 01-Feb-25 13:51:57

I used to enjoy watching this program, for many years but the last few series became too violent and/or creepy to watch before going to bed.
However, as there seem to be many good reviews on here, I should give it a second chance.
