Just watched this, a spin off from ‘Motherland’.

Oh dear, not funny.

Better left in the past, I think.

I really enjoyed it. I loved Motherland. Poor Amanda is so cringeworthy she tugs at my heart strings.

I wasn’t expecting to see Siobhan McSweeney as Dell. She was hilarious as Sister Michael in Derry Girls.

Oh my lord .. she is such a great actress Siobhan and can’t remember what other programs she’s been in since Derry Girls which was hilarious..

I have avoided watching Amandaland as I am worried that her mother will turn out to be as nasty and unfeeling as mine was.

Am I being too cautious?

You’re overthinking it.

It’s a comedy!

Didn't bother with it. I'm not really a fan of slice-of-life sitcoms where nothing much happens -- I saw 2 or 3 episodes of Motherland and wasn't particularly impressed, so I thought a spin-off would probably be even flatter. Just not my type of humour, I guess.

Definitely - it's Joanna Lumley really.

I watched it with a big pile of ironing, started to like some of the characters, preferable to hideous Julia and pathetic Kevin.
Amanda is vile, sometimes I can hardly bear to watch her, but it was okay, am I having a false memory, or did Kevin and Amanda get together in Motherland?
Surely not

Allsorts Thu 06-Feb-25 19:59:03

I just didn't find it funny just cringing. Will persevere though.

Yes, they 'got it on' when he was helping her pack up the stuff in her shop and they opened a bottle of champagne.

I have just bingewatched Amandaland and thought it was lovely, nice gentle humour. I think the ones on here who thought it was so poor must have watched the wrong programme. So much better than all the reality and celebrity trash that we seem to be constantly bombarded with.

MiniMoon Thu 06-Feb-25 22:02:46

I didn't watch Motherland so have nothing to compare it with. I'm afraid Amanda land left me cold, I switched off after about 15 minutes. It isn't my kind of comedy.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 06-Feb-25 22:49:33

I loved Motherland and binge watched the whole lot when I had Covid.

I watched the first two Amandalands tonight. I laughed a few times but she’s so awful! Joanna Lumley is great. Does anyone else think she’s playing herself?

I watched episode 2 this afternoon - I think it probably gets better. I started to understand the new characters a bit more and enjoyed it a lot more than the 1st one.

Joanna Lumley has a much bigger role and she's playing a blinder.

Joanna Lumley always plays a blinder! x

I am going to watch Amandaland as I loved Motherland. I probably know it word for word I’ve watched it so much. My DH and I do love a good comedy. Amandaland is getting mixed reviews and I’m looking forward to giving it my own.

MayBee70 Fri 07-Feb-25 12:16:24

I’ve just binge watched it and I loved it. No, it wasn’t Motherland because, obviously, many of my favourite characters weren’t in it. But over the six episodes I grew to love the new ones.

Sara1954 Fri 07-Feb-25 12:24:27

I just said to my daughter, you have to give the new characters a chance to become familiar, I liked the two dads, I was never keen on Julia, but I missed Liz

Usedtobeblonde Fri 07-Feb-25 12:26:37

I have done the same * Maybee* .
After my initial disappointment I really enjoyed it.
Amanda is dreadful as is her mother but the other characters grew on me and I hope there will be a second series.
For those who haven’t watched The Cockfields ,please give it a try.

MayBee70 Fri 07-Feb-25 12:34:10

I loved Liz! There’s the same poignancy about Amandaland that Motherland had. I was quite moved by the last episode. I must watch Derry Girls, which I’ve never seen.

ViceVersa Fri 07-Feb-25 12:54:48

I've only watched the first episode so far, but I enjoyed it. I think you do understand how Amanda is the way she is when you see her mother! I do miss the other Motherland characters though - I also loved Liz. Derry Girls is fantastic too! Definitely worth watching.

Eloethan Fri 07-Feb-25 13:50:27

I was so looking forward to this because I loved Motherland. I have seen the first two episodes and didn't find them at all funny. Maybe because there was an antidote to Amanda's horrible behaviour, in the shape of Liz's fabulous put downs and Kevin's niceness. Seeing Amanda's self-absorption and treatment of her friend leaves a very nasty taste (though it's hardly surprising she is not very loyal and kind, given her ghastly mother - yes, I know it's not real!).

|I thought I wouldn't bother any more but as Rainbow says it gets better, I'll give it another try.

Eloethan Fri 07-Feb-25 13:55:42

What channel is the Cockfields on?

MayBee70 Fri 07-Feb-25 14:29:28

It’s on BBC catchup! I’ve never heard of it. That’s tonight’s viewing sorted. Thanks Usedtobeblonde! Got some of my favourite actors in it.

Calendargirl Fri 07-Feb-25 14:50:30

I thought the Cockfields was similar to that ‘Here We Go’ so called comedy with Alison Steadman and her family.

I realise it’s not, as she isn’t in it.

So the Cockfields is better than that one, I take it?
