Eastenders - have you voted?

If there was a thread about, say, stamp collecting, I'd by-pass it. I'm not interested in it. I would have nothing meaningful or useful to contribute and I certainly wouldn't post on it telling everyone I don't do stamp collecting as if that were some sort of moral accolade for me!

Watching a soap doesn't mean I'm uncultured, stupid or unsophisticated.

However, coming into a thread about a subject in which you have no interest, merely to tell everyone you have no interest does make you look a bit stupid.

We don't care if you don't watch soaps, and we don't think you're morally superior or better than anyone who does.

In addition, I think most of the story writers and producers on Eastenders have studied at universities including Cambridge and Birmingham.

Well said, ferry23. There's always someone who thinks they are superior because of what they watch on TV, which is hilarious, IMO.

Watching TV at all is largely a passive experience, whether the programme is a documentary about the sex lives of clownfish, a programme maker's views about past current affairs or a dramatic representation of fictional inhabitants of Albert Square or Coronation Street. I don't think any sort of passive viewing gives people an intellectual edge . People with busy lives sometimes like to switch off in the evening, and watching a soap is just one way of doing that.

Discussing soaps can be a connection between people, and allows them to talk about difficult issues without risk. Gossip about characters is far less harmful than when it's about real people, too.

There are lots of TV genres that don't float my boat, but I am not rude enough to make snide remarks about them to those who do enjoy them. What do people get out of that? Genuine question.

I watch a lot of documentaries and although I'm a bit of a heathen when it comes to art, I do enjoy learning about different forms of art and the artists.

But I'm not above confessing to my "guilty pleasure" viewing. I think it's healthy to be able to appreciate a wide range of programmes - shows you're not a cultural snob.

Surely we can watch a cross section of things - that's what the telly is for.

I just watch Eastenders because I enjoy it. As said above just because you dislike a programme does not make you morrally superior, it makes you daft, because I can see through all the snobbery and put downs, shame people don't like themselves more or they would not do it.
Let people who want to watch soaps or reality TV do so, and if you don't like it don't watch.
The people who dislike sosps could start there own thread, rather than boring posters who like it.

I wonder if it is, as you say, rafichagran, an inferiority thing? If people feel insecure about how they are perceived they try to ‘big themselves up’ by putting down others? That might explain it, but using TV viewing, of all things, to do it is quite funny when you think about it 😀

Throughly agree with you KL, I dislike soap snobs too. Really like Doodledog and Rafichagran’s idea that they have an inferiority complex, sounds about right.

As for my spelling I didn't check before I posted, auto correct changed it, so to the gransnet police on spelling I apologise. Gosh! So Vicky must be about 36 or 37 because Angie and Den didn't stay very long in Eastenders, did they?

Oooh didn’t know Vicky was coming back into and I love the actor who played fletch in casualty I’m sure he was in Waterloo road too 🤔

I only know Fletch from Porridge - doubt it's him though sadly. Actually, he'd have fitted in quite well.
