Anyone see last night’s episode. The winner produced a 2and a half inch woodcut print. Carefully done but could have been anywhere. The other two artists produced full size and beautiful paintings. The watercolourist used a large brush and beautiful tones and colours. The other artist a panoramic and well designed painting which showed Bristol harbour as recognisable and well painted. Why ? Oh! Why.

Diversity ?
Much as I like the judges, (especially Tai Shan 💞), they do talk a load of twaddle sometimes and choose some really awful winners 🤦‍♀️

shysal Thu 27-Feb-25 10:53:03

I think most of the winners of the current series are awful!

pascal30 Thu 27-Feb-25 11:01:06

covering all bases I think. I liked her print but I wouldn't have chosen any of the final three...

ferry23 Thu 27-Feb-25 11:06:51

I can always predict the probable winner, it's usually the one I like the least.

And I agree with the twaddle! Last night Tai Shan said - and I think these are his exact words -

"it's almost as if he instinctively reacted to what was in front of him"...

...well excuse my ignorance, but if you're asked to paint a landscape that is in front of you, isn't that what you're supposed to do?

I was amused by that too Ferry22 so pretentious

eazybee Thu 27-Feb-25 11:41:16

I thought it was ridiculous.
Just suppose she should win, go to the South of France and return with something 3 inches square of similar quality.
What a waste.
I much preferred the watercolour

Esmay Thu 27-Feb-25 11:47:51

I missed it !
How annoying ,but something to look forward to .
I'm often disappointed by the winning choices .
I think that it has to be something new and anything traditional is passed over .
I often feel really irritated by the comments of the judges .
Certain expressions are particularly annoying -narrative and counter intuitive come to mind .

Lovetopaint037 Thu 27-Feb-25 16:39:14

Well that lady curator has a lot to say and seems to have influence over Kate and Thai who I feel have more to offer.
Feel sorry for the other artists who my dh always says were robbed. Just imagine that tiny piece of art hanging anywhere near Monet, Cezanne or Renoir in the Courtauld Gallery. It wasn’t just the size but I felt the design wasn’t more than a decoration and didn’t convey much about the subject.

Lovetopaint037 Thu 27-Feb-25 16:41:14

Might be interesting to have more than one set of judges although at least they get the final credit as to its worth at the end.

specki4eyes Thu 27-Feb-25 18:06:38

I agree, I think they're running out of word salad. But what's worse are the original submissions...more often than not most unworthy.
I mean gloomy charcoal scribbles cannot possibly be appropriate to depict the South of France!

And then there are the AWFUL unfunny puns
peddled by Stephen Mangan interspersed by the mind numbingly pathetic adverts by the sponsors.
I once loved LAOTY but it's losing it..fast!

MayBee70 Thu 27-Feb-25 18:17:57

I usually prefer the wild card winner.

pascal30 Thu 27-Feb-25 19:11:43

I absolutely love the wild card artists.. I wish they would spend more time on them

Deedaa Thu 27-Feb-25 20:58:57

I haven't seen this episode yet but so far I have liked all the winners in this series. I like all the innovative work we are seeing, and there's plenty of innovation among the wildcards too.

Marg75 Thu 27-Feb-25 22:35:48

I've given up on it as I can't understand why they pick the artists that to they do. Some of the paintings are dreadful. Love the portrait one though.

Marmight Fri 28-Feb-25 09:53:40

😂🤦‍♀️

Lovetopaint037 Fri 28-Feb-25 09:53:43

Yes Marg the Portrait one is much better. For one thing the sitters are interesting. Yes the wild cards are often better.

Marmight Fri 28-Feb-25 09:54:22

That was to Ferry23

Deedaa Fri 28-Feb-25 23:02:19

I don't bother with the portrait one anymore. I get so annoyed with so many of them working from their I pads instead of the model and there's always someone going for photo realism which really isn't my thing. I've seen the little woodcut now and I think it's lovely. I've always had a soft spot for wood cuts as my art teacher at school was an expert. I don't see her winning the competition, but I have liked the paintings they've chosen so far.

suelld Sat 01-Mar-25 13:35:17

Art is very subjective, but tho I haven’t seen this years bunch I agree that they often choose awful winners. “ But he got the ‘feel’ of the person/ landscape…” . The fact that it looks nothing like the subject(s) painted escapes them
I think they are always trying to be clever and find something ‘arty’ instead of great realism with a bit of character! I despaired and almost gave up watching! But I like Stephen Manganese, so often pick it up again later.

A friend of mine has been on PAOTY a couple of times and apparently you have to stay where you are painting (because of the constant camera presence) and it is very difficult to actually see the sitter.. so much easier to use technology.. and they are constantly interrupted by the presenters.. very challenging I think..

Totally agree!

Deedaa Sat 01-Mar-25 20:21:50

It has struck me that they seemed very cramped pascal30 and being constantly watched is a nightmare for any painter.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 01-Mar-25 20:51:14

Stephen Mangan is the best bit in my opinion! I reckon he knows a lot of what the judges are saying is bullsh**. I am usually disappointed by the winner. Why oh why, I ask myself.

Lovetopaint037 Sat 01-Mar-25 21:35:31

It’s an eye opener when you see Bill Bailey’s Extraordinary Portraits where the artist is usually professional and of a very high standard.
