Anyone else watching this? Series 2 now, I really like it, very lightweight, but entertaining. Men will hate it, because it’s about middle aged women helping a female police detective solve murders in a small Thames side town. Available on Channel U on Freeview.

What's 'entertaining' about someone being murdered? Or will this label me as being 'woke?'

I love a murder mystery but often think how unusual it is that we're so hooked on them. From Shakespeare to Shakespeare and Hathaway, Agatha Christie to Agatha Raisin our bookshelves and TVs would be sparse without crime and detective stories.

Is it that we like solving puzzles? Or that the bad guy mostly gets caught? I bet someone clever knows the answer.

Very cosy and middle England/class and dare I say it, a bit twee. I think you have to be either aspirational or come from a 'nice, good' background to appreciate it. I'm not and I don't.

However, I am a great fan of Samantha Bond and she is very good.

I think it is a bit of a blanket statement OP to say Men will hate it.

I'm not and I do.

I’m going to pay more attention to that strap thingy at the back when assembling a flat pack bookcase now.

Oh, I'm aspirational!

I just knew I wanted a car and a telephone when I grew up from the age of about 10. 😁

Well, I did say to DH the other day that, if it wasn't for murders, there's be nothing on the TV.

Why?

Boz Sat 22-Mar-25 15:17:10

All we seem to watch is murders, to the extent I am beginning to feel it is unhealthy to be going to bed on top of such a viewing diet.
How do people who live alone cope with such stuff before bedtime - or indeed any time?
I can just about cope with the semi-comical stuff or even Vera or Morse but DH has a penchant for those horrible dark scandi-noirs which are starting to give me the willies.

keepingquiet Sat 22-Mar-25 15:50:03

I do think we are fascinated by the darkness- fantasy and horror help us to face our fears I think, and tales of blood and gore are as old as time.

What I don't understand are the murder in the vicarage kind of fiction/drama where the dark aspects of murder are somehow sanitised and made 'clean' for I suppose respectable people.

Maybe it is all a matter of taste but I do think we are obsessed by this murder mystery aspect and especially making it about the culprit and the methodology rather than the victim?

Each to their own I suppose...

"Men will hate it, because it’s about middle aged women helping a female police detective solve murders in a small Thames side town".......not so OP....my OH really enjoys it. We have watched all the new episodes this week.

I was on a jury for a murder trial, it didn't feel a bit like how it does when you watch it on TV.

On your recommendation dempie55 I've just watched the first 2 episodes of series 1. It's very Miss Marple - and I love Agatha Christie, but possibly because they're set in a bygone age. Yes, it was twee, and slightly irritating, but I expect I'll watch ep 3 & 4 at a later date, so thank you for the heads up.

In a similar vein, I'm looking forward to the TV Richard Coles vicar murders in the autumn because I like the books. I can't take to the Richard Osman books - sorry. However if Chris Columbus is directing the film with an amazing cast (Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Daniel Mays, Richard E. Grant) I may force myself to reconsider!

JdotJ I can get sub-titles when I watch it. I like it because the four women are so very different and with such varied backstories.

No, it's not! Well, not like the Marlow Murder Club anyway.

Really enjoyed it I love city crime dramas. Hubby likes it too. Well done Samantha bond and friends.

Such rubbish, but enjoyable watchable rubbish, I shall stick with it for light entertainment.

When the news is full of misery, sometimes it's good to watch some daft rubbish where problems are always solved in a couple of hours.

Robert Thorogood’s writing transfers well from Paradise to Marlow.
Enjoyable , and despite DH being a man is enjoying it too. Loved the ride on the mobility scooter -daft though it was.

I’m grateful for a break from 1883 and Dexter.

Did anyone watch Comic Relief last night on BBC?

There was a mash up of Beyond Paradise and Not Going Out. Sally Bretton plays Lucy, the wife of Lee Mack in Not Going Out and Martha, wife of Kris Marshall in Beyond Paradise.
😂

I watched the first series, which was a bit fluffy, if you know what I mean. Nice scenery, characters doing things they shouldn't, silly climbing-in-window scenes. Saying all that, I did enjoy it.

We tend to get British TV shows a year or two after original broadcast, so now that I know another season is set, I will watch for it.

NotAGran55 Sun 23-Mar-25 07:12:47

Yes I saw that Allira and loved it. Very clever 😄
I’m going to see a recording of Not Going Out in a couple of weeks, and love the interaction between Sally and Lee.

NanKate Sun 23-Mar-25 08:04:43

Absolute tosh, but I suspect I will watch the next two episodes.

Usedtobeblonde Sun 23-Mar-25 09:35:29

If I thought Marlow Murder club was rubbish but enjoyable has anyone tried Sister Boniface?
Now that really is unwatchable rubbish.
I was tempted by so many ads for it but oh dear, I couldn’t even finish one episode.
