Anyone else watching this? Series 2 now, I really like it, very lightweight, but entertaining. Men will hate it, because it’s about middle aged women helping a female police detective solve murders in a small Thames side town. Available on Channel U on Freeview.

If I thought Marlow Murder club was rubbish but enjoyable has anyone tried Sister Boniface?
Now that really is unwatchable rubbish.
I was tempted by so many ads for it but oh dear, I couldn’t even finish one episode.

Same here. I thought it might be similar to Father Brown but not in the same league.

I would very much like to watch this but am unable to as the channel its on doesn't have subtitles!

Are you watching this on catch-up tv channel U?

This is where I watched Marlow - and Yes, there are sub-titles but you have to set them on each time you go to it. It defaults always to Subtitles Off. If you press the 'Settings' button on your remote you should see the sign saying 'subtitles off' Click on that and they will be on

The other catch-up channels 'remember' that I need subtitles, but cannot find a way of keeping them on this channel U

Utterly unbelievable but very enjoyable.

I’ve mentioned this on another thread, but when I watch anything ‘live’ on the U channel, every so often the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds. Really annoying.

Doesn’t happen on any other channel, so must be an issue with U.

Puts me off watching stuff on it.

Sorry about that Calendargirl. I don’t have that problem. The commercial breaks on U sometimes have only one or no adverts. It too k me a while to realise I needed to pause it if I wanted a cuppa.

Caveat emptor…

Having read and rather enjoyed all of the ‘Marlow’ books I was looking forward to some easy Sunday TV watching.
However I’m bitterly disappointed to find that only the first 2 episodes of this TV series are actually adapted from a Robert Thorogood book - Death Comes To Marlow.

The other 4 episodes are not!

I won’t bother watching the last 2 episodes of the series, and the next time he is on our local radio I will ask him why his own books were not used.
It hadn’t occurred to me to research anything about this series…silly me ….buyer beware.

I saw that mentioned, but I enjoyed watching them anyway. We binge watched all episodes last night.
It’s disappointing in a way, but the writers have both been involved with other murder mysteries.

Watched the second episode of the new series.

Just sooo far fetched.

As if three middle aged women would be allowed in the vicinity of a murdered corpse, poking and prodding about in the investigation, sitting in on the discussions ….

And they all get on my nerves, particularly bossy, nosey Judith and the pushy dog walker one whose name escapes me.

Franbern Thu 27-Mar-25 09:10:54

,Yes, very far fetched - but such easy watching. Definitely will not go down as one of the 'greats', Morse, Lewis, Marples, Endeavour, etc. After all, think how many series of Death in Paradise and its spin offs have been. Do hope we are going to have future episodes of Patience and Ludwig.

They are all sheer fantasy entertainment for me - and that is what I want these days.

I quite like Sister Boniface. Absolute tosh but pretty to look at and sometimes laugh out loud funny.

Allira Thu 27-Mar-25 12:37:25

We're hoping Darby and Joan will return soon too.

It has returned but it has to be paid for by registering for something called Acorn TV.
Very annoying.

Calendargirl Thu 27-Mar-25 13:06:59

I think D&J will reappear after a while on a freeview channel.

Agreed.
Father Brown, she isn’t, but they’re funny.

Thanks, I'll look out for it 🙂

Well obviously these ladies would never get away with the things they do. It's no Inspector Morse, but the scenery is pretty and it's all quite fun. I enjoy Sister Boniface, which I watch as a comedy.

I think the original series was on Acorn tv, but later on was streamed on Drama (U).

Sorry to agree that the Sister Boniface Mysteries have become inane and insultingly bad. It's unwatchable now. I love Sister's character and the actress, but the surrounding characters and story lines have devolved into stupidity. It's gone beyond "light crime" with odd characters into comical parody. Such a shame.
