I thought I had missed an episode.

One minute, Lou was asking Sally to lend her money to pay a barrister to ‘get her off’, as she missed her kids so much, despite the fact that she had previously spent an inordinate amount of time and money in the pub and never seemed too fussed about her offspring back then.

Next minute, going to plead guilty, and accepting she was going to prison for some considerable time.

Complete turnabout.

No idea when she and Sally became bessy mates either.

vegansrock - it is amazing isn't it. Eileen moved to Thailand within a couple of days. Everyone works on their doorstop and jobs just appear like magic. Nobody ever needs an interview or reference and start the next day. Children are forgotten when everyone is in the pub or Bistro. Dr. Gaddass visits you at home within 5 minutes of you falling ill. Houses are made from elastic. I can see why Debbie offered £30000 over the asking price for Number 6, it seems a great street to live on.

I recall Tyrone leaving for a holiday about a year ago, arranged in five minutes - that had to be the record. It was suggested, and he was gone. Yasmeen, too - offered a senior post 'in London', ( she must have been aged about seventy ) she sold her share in Speed Daal to Leanne, and left, in about twenty four hours. Evelyn too - university degree course and grant arranged, somewhere to live, and even a part time job to fund her. The pace must be dizzying when you are leaving, a stark contrast to some of the storylines of late.

amazing how quickly things happen in soap land - houses bought and sold, Sally and Tim becoming foster parents without months of training and interviews.

Baby Frankie is happy playing in the baby cupboard with all the other babies in there, the list is very long now.
There is another , bigger cupboard where all the older children are in.
Every so often one or two are brought out when a storyline featuring them is needed.

Lou's loan request won't end well for Sally and Tim - a refusal, and she will possibly revert to type, and threaten to say she doesn't want them to have 'the girls', or they will manage to raise the cash somehow and .....we can all see how that will end. Why aren't Adam or Dee Dee defending her? There is always Evelyn, who is due to reappear soon, doubtlessly with a law degree (Hons.)

The Theo story line is really grating on me now. Theo is a dreadful actor and Todd is behaving like a doormat, he deserves so much more.

At least there was a nice happy scene with Aadi and Lauren last night. Sadly it probably won't end well.

I wish Theo and Carl would share a minicab anywhere and never return. I dislike both of them.

Ken, Rita and Audrey are well in their 80’s/90’s.

I imagine they have problems remembering their lines, and physically being on set and ‘acting’ must be a huge effort.

I would love to see a change in scriptwriters and more continuity, because I rarely see the same name two episodes in a row.

More extras are walking down the street, but they are cheaper than the cast.

Where has Ken gone? I know he has financial worries in his personal life, and he is around 90, but I don't think he looks or acts his age.

We rarely see much of Rita or Audrey, are they also fading into retirement?

Lost in the mists of history, but was Coronation Street shown for half an hour, twice a week, when it started? I seem to recall Monday and Wednesday.

Nothing has audiences of millions now - people stream and use catch-up. UK soaps are franchised abroad, and pay for themselves that way. Cuts to budgets rarely work out for the best (the recent 'small cast' ones have made a big difference to the feel of the show), but much depends on how the scriptwriters respond to them.

Personally, I think that going to three hours a week was too much - the storylines have had to move too far away from the domestic, family-based ones to fill the time, and it hasn't worked in the show's favour. If the running time is cut and they go back to 'kitchen sink' values it could well be for the best.

Obviously when Coronation St had 18 million viewers, there was far less competition and where I lived, people grew into it with their parents and grandparents. Now there is so much choice and younger viewers don't seem interested in soaps, and there aren't young skewing soaps like Neighbours any more.
You're right that increasing the amount of episodes was a big mistake, as it has been for Emmerdale as well. Three 30 minute episodes and the occasional 1 hour special is enough as the soaps worked better that way and the budget wasn't as stetched. I think what will happen with C St is it will probably go back to its roots to survive.

I wonder how much longer Coronation St has left as audience figures are below 3 million now and ITV have announced a cut to the budget and running time for next year. I wonder if it will end up in daytime in the next few years before being cancelled some time in the next decade.
This is a bit of a controversial opinion on a fans thread, but I've noticed the soaps in general have a fraction of the audience they had 20 years ago. I never hear anyone at work discuss them, which was a common topic of conversation 15 years ago, and young people have no interest.
