Anyone watch it last night? Timothy Spall's new comedy detective series. I was looking forward to this, but found it very disappointing. Rather silly, trying too hard to be funny, annoying characters. Not sure I'll watch the next episode.

I think what sums it up for me is the scene where the policewoman gives someone who's crying her handkerchief to wipe her tears. Who then, of course, blows her nose with it and hands it back. I guess the whole series is meant to be full of supposedly amusing things that have been in other series over the years but none of it is funny or amusing. A comedy can't be funny all the time. There has to be a mixture and one important item is a bit of pathos. I had it on catchup all night and whenever I woke up and watched a bit more it hadn't got any better. I know Timothy Spall has been in dramedies throughout the years [in which he's been very good] but I don't think he's ever done full on comedy and he doesn't have the comedy timing for it imo.

Just been reading that Death Valley is ‘officially coming back for a second series after its strong debut run’.

Obviously they haven’t been following the comments on GN.

confused

I bet they commissioned a second series on the assumption that everyone was going to like it. I wonder if they felt that something based in Wales would automatically be loved because of the popularity of Gavin and Stacy? And yet, with Ludwig, they waited to see how popular it would be with viewers before they commissioned a second series.with viewers. Maybe Timothy Spall only agreed to be in it if there was going to be more than one series? It’s all very odd. I can’t think of any other series that has met with so much dislike.

I have enjoyed all the episodes very much. I think all the characters interact very well too. Timothy Spall is excellent as is his sparring partner - the woman detective.

Good fun, normal people, and community, and the crimes are not all "in your face awful violent crimes against women"

I like it very much

I enjoyed watching Timothy Spall but the woman detective's acting was dreadful, found her really irritating. In fact all of the police came across as incompetent.

I have really tried with this new series but I cannot stand that woman detective.

It grew on you as it had a good scriptwriter and at least it was cheerful. I actually laughed out loud on the odd occasion but they need to stop trying too hard.

I liked the joke when a young eco-warrior was asked why she was dating an estate agent, to be answered that he was on his way to becoming very rich. Priceless.

I still love it, it's funny, sweet easy watching.
More surprising the TV Review critics love it, so pleased it's coming back for a second series, not surprised.
Thank goodness we all don't like the same thing.

We've watched them all now and I have to say it grew it me.Nearly put off by comments and first episode but as the relationship grew between TS and the police officer it had a lot of warmth and humour. And could certainly do with that with all the misery in the real world. So happy to watch another series here.

I’ve really tried to find it funny but I can’t.

I’ve really tried to find it funny but I can’t.

That’s because it’s not 😂

I wasn't sure after episode 1 but I found it grew on me (but not as good as the excellent Ludvig).

It is just a lighthearted Sunday night mystery show along the lines of Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway etc with crazy characters and improbable plots. I think it would have been better if it had got a full hour rather than 45 mins as the plots were a bit rushed - probably it is already sold overseas and need to leave room for adverts.

Also a bit of a reunion for some of the Gavin and Stacey cast (Dave Coaches and Gwen)

I’m glad they’re doing a new series.
