I think it’s supposed to draw the viewers eyes down to a point at the ankle - hoping to create an optical illusion of slimness, rather than having an oblong shape of legs side by side.

I once read the exact thing, and that in modelling it’s one of the done things.Mind you, try telling that to the M&S tall thin models who stand with legs wide apart and feet in bovver boots to show off a Summer dress.😄
Oreo I too have wondered why M and S seem to have models sit in strange poses that often make it hard to see the shape of the garment. A favourite is to have the model put one leg up on a high item, wearing a great chunky 'bovver' boot.
