Murder Most Puzzling.

I started watching this on Channel 5 last night with not very high hopes.

Starring Phyllis Logan as a crossword puzzler setter, and drafted in as a murder solver (all these amateurs).

I fell asleep half way through, didn’t find it riveting.

A cross between Murder She Wrote, Death Valley, and that Marlow Murders with Samantha Bond.

A while ago I borrowed one of the books from the library upon which the series is based but couldn’t get into it.

What did anyone else think? Unsure if I will even bother rewatching the first episode.

I too tried an Osman book and found it unconvincing and boring so did not finish it. I know others do like his books, but they are not for me.

Absolutely hammy acting from everyone, and gratuitous, swearing which sounded so forced, shame because the plot was good

Chardy - you are wrong. Was totally disappointed by Osman's first book, which I had been looking forward to reading and was given as a Christmas present. His style is childish and the plot was boring. No more thanks.

and now I can echo a similar reaction to the Murder Most Puzzling episode on the TV yesterday. It was rubbish.

Oh dear, 10 mins, switched off.

Isn’t Ludwig with David Mitchell also about a detective who’s a crossword compiler ?

Seakay Sat 21-Jun-25 18:04:20

I loved it and found it hilarious

Loved the first Osman book, enjoyed the second, gradually they seemed to tail off until I wasn't sure who was flying to and from where, and why, in the last one. Perhaps it is me!

I loved Ludwig. I don’t think I’ll bother with Murder Most Puzzling though, after reading this thread.

"Oh, I bit like Madame Blanc then 😁"

Allira yes, Madame Blanc is very similar, but I don't mind watching that, as I love the scenery and setting.

Glad it wasn’t just me.

Why did Mrs Hughes agree to be in such tripe?

Did she and Mr Carter need a new kitchen or something?

Made me laugh so much

It didn’t appeal to me, so won’t watch. Too many of these amateur sleuth dramas for my liking. I watched Madame Blanc once, but didn’t bother with any more.

I yawned my way through Murder Most Puzzling .
It just didn't work .
There aren't any more of them , I hope.

We were looking forward to Murder Most Puzzling as we generally like this type of programme (although we gave up with the Madame Blanc series a long time ago). We both found it very disappointing but will watch the second episode just to give it a chance. We like a light hearted murder whilst eating our evening meal!

I was about to write the same thing when I saw your post.
I really enjoyed Ludwig and I believe there is to be another series.

I think I shall give MMP a miss in view of the poor reviews by GNs.

Incidentally, I read the first Thursday Murder Club book and I have no intention of reading any more or watching TV adaptations. I do like Richard Osman as a presenter though.

Chardy Mon 23-Jun-25 21:51:15

I didn't think Ludwig tried as hard to be amusing as MMP did. Is that why it worked better?
I started with Madame Blanc, and just got into the habit of watching it. Love Sally Lindsey, and her sidekick, Dom, is entertaining. But find several other characters irritating and irrelevant to the plots.

It's on again at 8.00 pm on channel five .
Last week -
I felt as though I'd wasted my time watching it -perhaps I'll give it another go.
Some murder mysteries really grab my attention .
Even though Jonathan Creek was rather far fetched -I loved it .

Elrel Thu 26-Jun-25 21:57:50

Oh dear, it was no better this week, so unconvincing…

I quite like Madame Blanc. The characters are so OTT they’re almost believable. There’s also a definite spark between Jean and Caron but they don’t seem to have noticed it. 😂

Watched the first part and dozed off through the remainder .
It's dire.
