Not sure why they are showing this at this time of night, but it's a good bit of nostalgia!

Shinamae Sun 06-Jul-25 20:56:21

I always found Andy Pandy and the Wooden tops quite creepy…..😭
I did like picture book with Patricia Driscoll… And Rag,Tag and bobtail….🤗

It's certainly repetitive! It wasn't my favourite, but I liked Rag, Tag and Bobtail too. Wonder what our grandchildren would make of it. Not a lot, I think.

As I recall, it was Picture Book on Monday. 👍🏻

Andy Pandy on Tuesday. 👎

Bill and Ben on Wednesday. 👎

Rag, Tag and Bobtail on Thursday. 👍🏻

The Woodentops on Friday. 👍🏻👍🏻 (‘And last of all, the very biggest spotty dog you ever did see’).

I loved Bill and Ben and the Wooden tops! Not a fan of Andy Pandy. There were Tales from the Riverbank with Johnny Morris too.

Calendargirl Mon 07-Jul-25 07:04:31

Tales From The Riverbank wasn’t part of Watch With Mother though.

Spot on. And then it all closed down until the evening if I remember rightly.

I'm trying to remember if I actually understood what Bill & Ben were saying, other than "weed".

And of course there was Listen with Mother on the radio.

I used to go to a friend of my grandmothers to watch on their television, nobody else we knew had one

Grandmabatty Mon 07-Jul-25 07:46:28

Memory is failing me! I always thought it was Calendargirl. I suppose I lumped them all together in my memory

TFTR was on at teatime, I think.

Johnny Morris narrated, I believe.

I didn’t like it much, never been keen on nature programmes, even as a child.

The Woodentops were my favourite because of spotty dog 😃

Grantanow Mon 07-Jul-25 09:30:20

Don't they have anything better to put on?

vintage1950 Mon 07-Jul-25 09:41:41

I don't think that modern children would be interested in Andy Pandy. It's all black and white.

Wait... were they druggies, and we never realised? 🫣
Wouldn't be allowed nowadays!

It was meant to show how children’s television has transitioned over the years not just about Andy Pandy. It was a nostalgic trip.what about Noggin the Nog, Postman Pat etc. all British produced and there are some still made here. So I didn’t think its findings were that good as it didn’t really study the subject properly. It was nice seeing the old clips though.

I liked Sooty and Sweep, not that we had a TV when I was very small - I enjoyed Listen With Mother, though, on the big, old-fashioned ‘wireless’.
A very early crashing disappointment came from finally managing to get behind it to see the little people who were talking (probably Mrs Dale’s Diary).
Just wires and the odd little light bulb!
What a let down!

How strange. We were telling DD about Watch With Mother yesterday. She brought up videos of The Woodentops (my favourite, my husband still sometimes calls me Mrs Scrubit) and Andy Pandy on her phone, then this thread appeared.

Beechnut Mon 07-Jul-25 10:18:35

😂 Witzend. I used to imagine little people walking across the ceiling and down the wall to get into the radio.

One of my earliest memories when I was around 3 yrs old was running to the wireless every time I heard Danny Kaye singing There Once Was an Ugly Duckling 🎶 🎶

I’d stand on my tip toes and peer in through the grill on the wireless looking for the poor little duckling!

I’d stand on my tip toes and peer in through the grill on the wireless looking for the poor little duckling!

That's made me think of Uncle Mac and Children's Favourites. smile

Thank you ferry23 for jogging my memory. I’d forgotten the name of the programme. I’ve found this on YouTube if you’d like a trip down memory lane 😊

Yes.. I remember watching as a little one. Apprently, I used to cry when "Sooty" finished and waved bye bye. Anyone remember... Torchy the Battery Boy? And Twizzle? I loved those programmes, on at Tea time I recall.

Yes, they're so used to colour TV or cartoons. I used to like Listen with Mother, very soothing. I think that this could be popular at bedtime

Cumbrianmale56 Tue 08-Jul-25 16:23:33

There was a colour version of Andy Pandy made in 1970 that was shown into the eighties and was slightly less stiff and formal than the black and white version. However, the narrator still sounded like she attended RADA in the 1950s.
Not that this was a problem as the programme was very popular with small children and was timeless in a way.

Ooh listen with mother.
