I am watching this, and wondering where the last 40 years have gone.

I remember that day in its entirety as if it were yesterday.

I was pregnant, I remember where we went for dinner (having put a video in to record whilst we were out).

I can remember feeling so overwhelmed and emotional, probably pregnancy hormones.

I’m watching it too - with mixed memories ….

For all I'm not a fan if Bono I wish I'd seen U2 live.DH and I saw Queen the year after live and and Freddie had such charisma. And that voice.

Loving watching Live Aid again. Even enjoying the mullets . So many great performances for a good cause.
Re Bono, my SIL who is a massive U2 fan, says the band nearly split up after Bono’s antics that night.

I was lucky enough to see Freddie live once, I have never seen a performance like his.

merlotgran Sat 12-Jul-25 21:51:20

I’m watching it with mixed emotions as well.

kittylester Sat 12-Jul-25 22:08:54

Well, I'm loving Bryan Ferry and Paul Young.

kittylester Sat 12-Jul-25 22:13:44

And the fabulous Alison Moyet.

We are watching it on iplayer

Yes watching again as we did 40years ago. Tickets were £5 with a £20 donation. It was a beautiful day then too. I can remember the kids playing in the paddling pool.

My ticket 😎

Queen, without doubt, gave the best performance. There will never, ever be another Freddie.

merlotgran Sat 12-Jul-25 22:55:28

Elton John. Just brilliant!

I’m watching it too- Id just turned 26 first time round…My problem is this is how I remember all these stars, and when I see them on tv now I think ‘wow haven’t they aged’ quite forgetting that I too am now a 66 year old granny smilewink

We've been watching all night, but Mr D has given up and gone to bed, the lightweight grin.

Freddie was amazing, and it brought tears to my eyes to hear him sing Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions, knowing what his fate would be. He could really play a crowd, couldn't he?

I am staying up to the end, although I've given up second guessing who will be next - there have been a lot of big hitters since 10.00 or so.

Bono is such a prat, isn't he? That poor girl was manhandled into the stage area, by which time he'd hugged a different one and he abandoned her to be manhandled back again! Wazzock.

The Who are excellent - I love Won't Get Fooled Again.

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 00:05:42

I meant that I know what Freddie's fate would be - luckily he didn't at that time.

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 00:09:09

Is that Andrew Ridgley? I've been saying 'that must be Pepsi and Shirlie' all night, but have been wrong grin. I was sure they were backing David Bowie, but he introduced different vocalists.

I am 15 minutes behind, so wondered how merlotgran had seen Elton John. He's coming on soon in my house - Black Sabbath are on now.

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 00:33:10

Oh, here's George 💕.

His performance pf Somebody To Love at the Freddie Mercury tribute is the other one that makes me cry every time, as his partner was in the crowd and had just been diagnosed with the utterly dreadful AIDS.

I would make a comment on he and Elton singing Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, but only on other forums 😉

Has everyone else gone to bed?

rafichagran Sun 13-Jul-25 01:04:17

I have dipped in and out as there are other things I wanted to watch, enjoyed Queen, Mick Jagger and David Bowie.

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 01:12:43

Phil Collins is on here now, maybe wrapping up, or will that be left to Bob Geldof?

It was interesting that Neil Young performed separately from CS&N. I enjoyed both.

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 01:19:56

Let It Be must be the finale?

I did see it the first time round, but would have been 24 or so, which is longer ago than I care to admit grin

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 01:21:38

Oh

Tenko Sun 13-Jul-25 10:47:29

I’ve been dipping in and out of it.
I was 26 then and was decorating aour living room with my x bf . I remember it was very hot and we kept stopping to watch live aid . The part that really got to me was the song Drive by The Cars . It was played during a very harrowing video . And even now when I hear that song , it takes me back to live aid .
My DH was there and we were both at the Bruce Springsteen concert the previous Saturday , although we didn’t know each other then .
It’s so sad that many of those great singers are no longer with us .

Freddie wasn’t diagnosed until 1989, 4 yrs after live aid.
The bio-pic film of Queen was wrong.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 13-Jul-25 11:02:53

Brilliant concert, I don’t think we will see the likes of anything else coming close to it.

Although fabulous talented musicians no longer with us 😿

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 11:11:45

I know, (and I knew someone would correct me grin) which is why I added an immediate second post to clarify that:

I meant that I know what Freddie's fate would be - luckily he didn't at that time.

I do wish we had an edit button so we could clarify posts when we realise the wording might be ambiguous.

Ahh I know what you mean doodledog.
He probably had it but maybe didn’t know!

Doodledog Sun 13-Jul-25 13:45:56

What I always find poignant is that he couldn't possibly have known anything about AIDS' existence when he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody (nobody did), yet the words sound like they were written by a sufferer. It's uncanny.
