Masterchef - going, going, gone?

John Torode's contract won't be renewed.

He allegedly made an offensive racist remark 7 years ago which he doesn't remember, and offended nobody.

The world and how we are expected to behave has considerably evolved in recent years. The way we spoke, the phrases we used and the ways of identifying people are quite different to what they were when I was young(er).

There were terms in use that were perfectly acceptable back then but are considered racist/homophobic etc now.

I'm not sure dragging John Torode into the whole sorry mess has done the BBC any favours. Particularly when they are still paying Huw Edwards obscene amounts of money.

It sounds ridiculous to me in this particular case.If it was years ago and he can’t remember it then was it recorded?

Harris27 Tue 15-Jul-25 19:25:10

Ridiculous don’t speak ever!

merlotgran Tue 15-Jul-25 19:49:17

How can an alleged comment which has not been proved be a sacking offence?

Is there more to this than meets the eye and the BBC is getting in first?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 15-Jul-25 19:53:28

BBC has made too many mistakes recently, the pulled Gaza documentary, Glastonbury fiasco, not taking any notice of the initial Greg Wallace accusations.

John Torode is a scapegoat.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 15-Jul-25 19:53:56

Oh and who can forget Hugh Edwards…

Casdon Tue 15-Jul-25 21:26:09

I suspect that there’s more to this than we’ve been told.
As for Masterchef, John and Greg weren’t the first presenters, and I’m sure it will continue with new ones, or even better, we could see more of Marcus and Monica.

I suppose I would need to know what he said but the timing makes me feel quite uncomfortable.

Crossstitchfan Tue 15-Jul-25 22:11:27

I don’t like Torode any more than I like Wallace which is why I never watched MC after the first couple of episodes, but I find this whole thing about Torode and his sacking weird to say the least. Why has something he allegedly did/said years ago been brought out of the woodwork? Who brought it up, and why now? There’s something very strange going on and it’s making me wonder what on earth will come out next to bite somebody on the bum!
As someone upthread said, it’s all completely different from years ago when almost anything was ok. The TV we watched then wouldn’t be allowed now. Remember Til Death Us Do Part’, for example? That would never be allowed to be shown now).
It worries me that I don’t know how to refer to a black person (can I even say that?). Are they ‘a person of colour’, (and what a stupid expression that is), are they coloured, black, negro, etc. or what? I would never want to upset or insult anyone, so I am getting scared to say anything these days. Does anyone have an answer? (I hope I haven’t offended anyone with this post!)

I've no idea, merlotgran but it seems very strange indeed.

Perhaps the whole show is past its sell-by date anyway.

Allira Tue 15-Jul-25 22:40:03

Perhaps the BBC is past its sell-by date too, judging by the problems it has had recently?

Casdon Tue 15-Jul-25 22:43:04

Has he been sacked though, or have they decided not to renew his Masterchef contract? I think they are different things.

25Avalon Tue 15-Jul-25 22:49:09

They have instructed the firm who hold the contract with John Torode not to renew it.

The world has taken an ultra-puritanical turn in recent years, compounded by the scrutiny of people who seem to actively look for something/anything to be offended about.
During the brief years of The Commonwealth, Olìver Cromwell succeeded in banning Xmas, Maypoles, singing in church, closed playhouses, censored books, etc.

If he came back today I'm sure he'd almost feel at home amongst the intolerant.

Granmarderby10 Wed 16-Jul-25 02:47:40

If these two men being removed/sacked means no more Masterchef then my response is 🎶 Oh Happy Day 🎶

eazybee Wed 16-Jul-25 07:16:39

Meanwhile, Tim Davie clings to his post.

BlueBelle Wed 16-Jul-25 07:39:48

Windmill so we accept professional ( or any other) men looking, touching and using innuendo's towards women and pulling their kecks down to presumable shock That’s all ok then because to complain is puritanical !!!
I grew up in a time when men who groped, touched or worse were just ‘having a laugh’ ! I thought we d moved on a bit

Gingster Wed 16-Jul-25 07:44:14

They all get ‘too big for their boots’

Fleur20 Wed 16-Jul-25 07:59:34

What confuses/amazes me is that ITV3 drag out all the Carry On films every bank holiday and weekend and apparently no-one complains!!
Talk about sexism, misogyny and racism??

lafergar Wed 16-Jul-25 08:03:57

Greg's mate must have known what he was up to.

Sparklefizz Wed 16-Jul-25 08:10:44

Wasn't Gregg Torode's best man at his wedding?

MrsQuigley Wed 16-Jul-25 08:12:26

If what is being said about John Torode is the whole truth then I think that his sacking/contract not being renewed is very unfair. I think that the BBC is playing God yet again. Especially as Tim Davie was at Glastonbury the day that vile pop duo were spreading hate for the world to hear. Two tier BBC too.

henetha Wed 16-Jul-25 10:41:49

It's so unfair to sack John Torode for some remark made years ago which he can't remember anyway, and possibly didn't even say.
I hope Masterchef continues with John and a new presenter.

Allira Wed 16-Jul-25 10:43:06

lafergar

Greg's mate must have known what he was up to.

So would all involved with the programme.
By that criteria, should they all be sacked?

Perhaps it's Tim Davie who should go?
Let's have a good clear-out at the top. The BBC has lost its moral compass.
