John Torode's contract won't be renewed.

He allegedly made an offensive racist remark 7 years ago which he doesn't remember, and offended nobody.

The world and how we are expected to behave has considerably evolved in recent years. The way we spoke, the phrases we used and the ways of identifying people are quite different to what they were when I was young(er).

There were terms in use that were perfectly acceptable back then but are considered racist/homophobic etc now.

I'm not sure dragging John Torode into the whole sorry mess has done the BBC any favours. Particularly when they are still paying Huw Edwards obscene amounts of money.

I can’t remember what my doll was called but I was the only one who had one too. My Nan used to knit it little dresses

Blossoming Fri 25-Jul-25 14:39:05

I don’t suppose Keith Floyd would even be broadcast now!

Mollygo Fri 25-Jul-25 14:05:04

Allira
It does sound exotic, and there are so many Oriental restaurants and takeaways, presumably creating and serving oriental dishes.
Maybe it’s coming back into fashion.

Why the 🙄? I would be offended if I heard someone use that word- it’s incredibly offensive.

What, Oriental?

Oh dear, I'll try not to use it again but it always sounds rather exotic to me.

No, I meant the word Torode has 'allegedly' used.

I wouldn't use the term 'Oriental' to describe a person though.

Crossstitchfan Fri 25-Jul-25 13:50:31

Sorry, Allira! I have just seen you bad a black doll too, but I somehow missed that when I told Jane she was the only one!
I love the idea of twins !

You’re the only other person I’ve come across who has! I didn’t give mine a very exotic name though, I just called her Susie! I absolutely adored her and I think that might have been the start of me liking things that are a bit ‘different’.

I had a black doll and a white doll the same size.
They were my twins. 🙂

Unless you called her the 'N word' I can't see why there is a problem with that🤷‍♀️

I agree with Casdon that the contestants have to be considered. It should be easy enough to have an announcement at the start of each programme.

Casdon Fri 25-Jul-25 13:23:40

I think for the sake of the contestants it should be aired, but with a clear statement at the beginning of each programme, and where possible voiceovers and less of John and Greg.

Mollygo Fri 25-Jul-25 13:08:53

The question now seems to be, should the BBC air the series that has already been filmed.
What do GNs think about that?

whywhywhy Fri 25-Jul-25 12:33:57

The programme has long outlived itself. They will not be missed and we definitely need some new programmes and presenters!

BUT there are people at the top who should be wheedled out!

OMG! Oriental is wrong too? I had no idea. Now you can understand why I am getting scared to open my mouth!

Anyone remember Prince Philip saying to someone he met on a trip to the Far East (better not say Orient!!!) that if they stayed too long they would get slitty eyes?

Some one claimed to have overheard him and they were offended. 🙄

Should The Orient Express be renamed then?

😂😂😂

Eastwards Express?
There and Back Again?

Welbeck our bedroom is called the "Master" bedroom for smart purposes. It makes my husband laugh because he always says he's master in name only!

Up until a couple of days ago, I would have called someone oriental if I had no idea of their actual heritage. It would have referred to the area just in the same way as I might be called a European. Of course I won't now but never in my wildest dreams would I have considered it racist. We leave and learn.

welbeck Mon 21-Jul-25 14:06:26

I've never agreed with the term master bedroom.
Apart from the slavery reference which is less relevant here there is the implication that the male is the leading person.
Main bedroom is better. Neutral.

welbeck Mon 21-Jul-25 14:03:50

I think it's referring to people as oriental that is best avoided.
I'm not sure why and was surprised when I first heard this a few years ago.
I think maybe it has a negative connotation in America?

Are Oriental Lillies ok?

You’d better ask the Lillies!😁😁

This is when I'd love a like button. 🤣🤣

I flipping hope so, as I always have them in my kitchen 🤦‍♀️

Mollygo Mon 21-Jul-25 13:17:10

It is a worry in these days of keeping up with offensive terms.
I looked up what it’s politically correct to say now. The list isn’t fully comprehensive, but is it any wonder we’re confused?

discourseworld.ru/photo/A%20list%20of%20100%20politically%20correct%20words%20and%20phrases.pdf

The one question it doesn’t answer is,

Is it racist to use white to when you’re referring insultingly to an individual or a group?

icanhandthemback Mon 21-Jul-25 12:31:46

If I inadvertently offend I apologise, explain I didn’t know that and say I will try to remember because the last thing I want to be is offensive. Quite a lot of unwitting racism is through ignorance rather than a desire to be offensive. I’d also prefer the offended to be open about it so I can attempt to put things right. I cringe when I hear that a term I use is incorrect and nobody tells me. It also gives me a chance to educate others in my circle who are similarly ignorant x

Allira Mon 21-Jul-25 12:30:14

I don't know if my Oridntal table is Japanese or Chinese (or neither). It's looking very tired and refuses to answer.

Spices from the Orient? Are they non-pc now?
