What is being widely reported now is that he sang a Kanye West song at a social gathering that contained the "N" word.
If that's true, it's somewhat double standards that the BBC allowed said song ~(and many others with dubious lyrics) to be played on their radio stations.
I think not renewing a contract because someone repeated a song in a social setting is out of order.
But as I say, that's if the reporting is correct.

(178 Posts)John Torode's contract won't be renewed.
He allegedly made an offensive racist remark 7 years ago which he doesn't remember, and offended nobody.
The world and how we are expected to behave has considerably evolved in recent years. The way we spoke, the phrases we used and the ways of identifying people are quite different to what they were when I was young(er).
There were terms in use that were perfectly acceptable back then but are considered racist/homophobic etc now.
I'm not sure dragging John Torode into the whole sorry mess has done the BBC any favours. Particularly when they are still paying Huw Edwards obscene amounts of money.
When I was a child, my father went abroad on business. He brought me back a doll that definitely wasn’t white! No-one I knew had one like her and I was the envy of my friends. No-one seemed upset by the colour. In fact it wasn’t mentioned, but everyone I knew wanted her! In those days my beautiful doll would have been referred to as ‘black’. I dressed her in a lemon dress and thought she was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen. So did my friends.
What has happened to the world?
ferry23 I was just about to post that.
The Rest Is Entertainment has an interesting podcast with more information about what John Torode did or didn't say and the help he was offered to remedy the situation. There is a radio version of the Kanye West song that doesn't have the offensive word so the BBC hasn't allowed it to be played. I learned a lot from the podcast about how involved the BBC are in the production of successful programmes. I certainly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more ( Global player).

It's a minefield isn't it?
I had no idea the term Oriental is considered to be a racial slur. To me it means someone comes from the East, and is the opposite of occidental (the west).
But I got that wrong.
OMG! Oriental is wrong too? I had no idea. Now you can understand why I am getting scared to open my mouth!
So many slurs.
I only knew vaguely that Oriental was rude because my father said it stood for a three word phrase I won’t repeat, which was a slur.
I’ve read of people being offended at being called British, when they’re from Scotland or Wales. Are English people offended by being called British?
My DGS’s current girlfriend was taken aback when I asked her if there was a large group of Asian students in her year group.
She assured me she wasn’t offended, but assured me that she was Chinese, as were most of her friends.
Embarrassed? I certainly was.

I didn't know either. Live and learn.
I have some Oriental furniture and china - what am I supposed to call it now?

I don’t think the furniture will take offence.
Well, the table looks very sad ☹
I see Greg Wallace is advertising his service as a weight loss coach at £200 a session I wonder if he ll get many takers
I think with John Torode there is a lot more that hasn’t been proven I think the one thing they could prove was him using the N word on a number of occasions but apparently there have been complaints of inappropriate language and behaviour but they haven’t been proven
I don’t think he got the push for one word used years ago I think that was all they could possibly quote at the moment and obviously needed him gone as soon as to limit more damage
Two thoroughly unlikeable men with no one wanting to hear complaints or rock the boat big shades of Savile s treatment
I heard on BBC News just now that John Torode had actually called a member of the team the N word, not just sung along with it.
From the BBC news
Torode had nine complaints against him, including racist language, abusive language to junior production staff and sexual language’
I don’t think it’s anything to do with singing a song They are probably gathering evidence but needed to get rid of quickly for damage limitation so used the one thing they did have proof of
We just see the public persona on our screens. The relentless "celebritisation" these days of anyone who appears on TV for any reason means the press are constantly on their heels and the public lap up all the details.
Freedom of the press is great in lots of ways but it does give rise to a lot of dodgy reporting and fake news.
I'm sorry Torode has gone as he always seemed like a decent enough bloke to me - but who knows how much we don't actually see or hear?
Doesn’t sound very decent Ferry23 if they are quoting abusive and sexual language to junior staff !!!

I hadn't seen any further reporting when I posted and I did add the bit about not really knowing everything that goes on.
Ah dear, in light of your post BlueBelle I need to revisit and say I was originally sorry he was going.
I now fear for Mary Berry. Her innocent soggy bottom remark all those years ago may be misconstrued

Oh dear, all those 'innuendos' with Paul Hollywood will now be scrutinised and misconstrued by the holier-than-thou brigade 😯

"There were terms in use that were perfectly acceptable back then but are considered racist/homophobic etc now".
Can I just ask perfectly acceptable to whom? or for whom, the person making the comments or the person having to receive the comments and pretend that everything was OK? Also how far back are you referring to?
If the comments are considered racist or homophobic now, they were definitely racist and homophobic then!

Oh good! Perhaps Hollywood will follow the other creepy womanising apologies for men! He is really improper.

Queer - was ok, then wasn't ok - now is ok again
Oriental - see upthread
Sold Down the River - recently outed as racist aropos slavery
Master Bedroom - apparently realtors in the US are being discouraged to use this term because of its link to slavery
Just a few off the top of my head in the early hours

Oh dear.
I think a bit of innuendo is not in the same category as exposing oneself to women.

Me too Allira.
I often have to pause mid-sentence and let my brain process if I'm using the correct word - which one was it that used to be ok but isn't now and which one is ok now but wasn't previously
Are Oriental Lillies ok?
