When TV arrived in Scotland in 1952, I was 11 but well remember Andy Pandy and Muffin the Mule- neighbouring kids came round to watch them. That summer we became hooked on Wimbledon - the summer of 'Little Mo' Connolly and I still watch avidly every summer. My favourite in my early teens was 'Animal, Vegetable, Mineral', a programme in which archaeologists had to try to identify objects from museums or recent digs. I longed to be an archaeologist and once went on a dig during a University vacation, but, though still interested, I never did manage to follow it up...I suppose it's too late now! I can't speak for the youth of today, but I have happy memories of taking two of my GC round Roman remains in Provence and my 6-year-old DGS identifying the parts of a villa he'd learned about at school.

I loved Opportunity Knocks with Hughie Green and Take your Pick with Michael Miles. I thought at the time that they both seemed rather smarmy, but I enjoyed their shows.

Emergency Ward Ten ( both my parents had medical backgrounds and thought the programme ridiculous) and Crossroads ( I ended up working in the Hospitality industry) were also favourites of mine.

My parents refused to get ITV for many years so I used to watch it at a friend’s house!

That music was divine. Infact a lot of theme tunes were.

Loved many of these. Also, Gilligan's Isle, Patty Duke show, (meet Patty who's lived most everywhere) Follyfoot, Ready Steady Go (I wanted Cathy McGowan hair and clothes). So many programmes- and we only had 3 channels!

Do not Adjust Your Set....wow that brings back memories. I remember thinking how witty the title was.

Imagine describing " adjusting a set" to somebody now!

The Virginian.
Colditz

Watching the clock on the fireplace preying that the episode wouldn't end.

Crackerjack! I remember Peter Glaze in a sketch where he thought he'd won the Pools, saying "Take this key to the builder and ask him to put a house on it". That's still my idea of being really really rich!,

Any programme with horses.
I loved Follyfoot and Whitehorses.
Also cartoons and Magpie. I preferred it to Blue Peter which seemed a bit stuffy and old fashioned.
Loving this thread!

I used to love Catweazle.

Franbern Fri 26-Sept-25 16:16:43

So many wonderful shows recalled on this Thread.
Like others my Dad got our first tv for the coronation, Whole street came into watch it. Tiny 12 inch screen. Later on it had a magnifying glass on it which increased its size and then a little box at the side , so we could also watch the new ITV.

Wagon Train I really loved
Blakes 7
Muffin the Mule (very early on)
Randall & Hopkirk deceased
Bonanza
Robin Hood
SUre there were many more
When I had my own family, Playschool and Magic Roundabout

And finally (giving others a chance to post!) my most handsome, kind cowboy from the 1965 series. Swoon! I did, even at junior school.

Clint Walker as Cheyenne Bodie. A roaming cowboy doing good deeds along the way (natch).

I could sing you the song … if you insist …

“Cheyenne, Cheyenne, where will you be roaming tonight …”

Love love loved him 🥰

The Wednesday Play which evolved into Play For Today. Nearly always controversial. Great stuff!

I doubt many would have heard of In Sickness And In Health and due to its politically incotrect content, will never be seen again.

Athrawes Wed 03-Sept-25 11:20:09
