........the TV version of Crisp's autobiography 'The Naked Civil Servant'.

Glorious! A real groundbreaker and it certainly stands the test of time.

It was really good, still remember it and what a good actor, too.

John Hurt was my huge 'actor crush' - since seeing The Elephant Man at the age of 19. He was such a brilliant actor - hardly anything he was in could be regarded as 'bad'. I do miss him.

And, yes, The Naked Civil Servant was so good.

I was lucky enough to go to a question and answer session with Quentin Crisp shortly after seeing 'The Naked Civil Servant' he was effortlessly charming and fascinating to listen to.

John Hurt gave a brilliant performance and the play marked the beginnings of a turning point in society's attitude to homosexuality.

John Hurt was a great actor

Athrawes Fri 26-Sept-25 09:56:50

I agree. John Hurt was a great actor. I enjoyed virtually everything he was in

Alwaysoptumistic Fri 26-Sept-25 10:02:24

I remember watching it many years ago and being shocked at how Quentin and his friends were treated. I watched again recently on YouTube, it’s still a powerful drama.
I’ve recommended it to a number of young people I know

Agree that "The Naked Civil Servant" was a fascinating story and Hurt a wonderful actor.
He was also a brilliant "Caligula" in "I Claudius"
RIP John Hurt, most unfortunately.

That was wonderful. John Hurt was a marvellous actor. After seeing the film I then bought the book which I still have. Quentin Crisp was utterly fascinating and witty.

I really admired John Hurt, a fantastic actor. 1984 and The Field are two of my favourite films.

His voice was wonderful.

Groundbreaking and very memorable, but then again John Hurt was a wonderful actor. I first saw him in The Man for all Seasons, and I think at the time he was picked out as "one to watch". He certainly was!

This has brought back a memory, my Husband would'nt let me watch it, as thing s turned out, I think there may have been something hiding in the closet.

John Hurt was one of the best actors going. So talented and versatile. Made some of the best British Films ever.

They were also brave and ground breaking.

I don't think he ever really got the plaudits and recognition he deserved.

So big round of applause for Mr Hurt and his films.

Indeed, Hurt was iconic and The Naked Civil Servant removed any possible doubt of this.
Also I feel is relevant to mention Dirk Bogarde in The Victim, an amazing film with stand out performances by Bogarde, made in 1961 when homosexuality was still illegal but pushing the boundaries with this story of a Homosexual man - Bogarde, blackmailed by his lover. I was blown away by this film and is still one of my favourites.

I read the book after seeing the film, and have always loved the line in them that he was 'blind with mascara, and dumb with lipstick'.
Another fan of John Hurt here.

….not to mention his comment about dust!

I was lucky enough to have Quentin Crisp as a life model at art school. A very witty and intelligent man. Brave too.

I remember a documentary about Quentin Crisp before he went to America. An interesting man, who showed how frustrating life can be for someone who doesn't fit the norm.

Deedaa Sat 04-Oct-25 23:46:03

JamesandJon33 How wonderful to have him as a model! We had a very hum drum collection although I do remember one lady who seemed to live on tomatoes' and always carried a bag of them with her.

I used to watch Quentin on a show called Paperback Writer. He was always so clever and entertaining, and of course, John Hurt played him superbly. I also remember going to see Dirk Bogarde in Victim, with my mother. I was only 15 at the time so it may have been a bit odd, but my parents were never very conventional.

To Babs03
I too, loved The Victim. Brilliant film and I had a tremendous crush on Bogarde. In fact, come to think of it, many of my teenage crushes were homosexuals, although I had no idea at the time!

Adored John Hurt, he was just incredible, in everything he did-"The Elephant Man" and "Midnight Express" are two of my top 10 films, and his tv work-"Naked Civil Servant"; "I, Claudius", "Crime and Punishment" etc was simply sublime.-I was a massive fan, collected all sorts of scrapbook items about him, and was lucky enough to see him on stage in three different productions-but never got the chance to speak to him in person, I would've loved to have done that. I was utterly heartbroken when I heard that he had died-though I knew he was ill, it wasn't a great shock, but what a loss to the acting world. Concidentally, my lovely older brother died from the same cancer (pancreatic) that Mr Hurt did-I'd never even heard of it before John Hurt's death. He should've had at least one Oscar-for "Midnight Express", if not "Elephant Man"--it was criminal that he was overlooked. An absolute master of his craft, we wont see his like again.

I remember it, too. It was a great education for me - I had.no idea what gay men (as we didn't call them in those days) were and it shaped my views from that day on. They're just people.

Esmay Sat 18-Oct-25 07:26:59

John Hart was a favourite actor of mine .
I'd like to see the Quentin Crisp film again .
I also enjoyed Dirk Bogarde in Victim .
At the time being gay wasn't socially acceptable.
I'll say one thing about my extremely uptight and prudish mother - she had several gay friends and was remarkably tolerant for her generation .

BlueBelle Sat 18-Oct-25 07:28:50

I loved it at the time and learnt so much from it especially not to worry about dust 🀣

BlueBelle Sat 18-Oct-25 07:31:30

Crosstitchfan I too loved Dirk Bogarde and was convinvpced he would find me and we would get married I had no idea about β€˜ being gay’ and no idea he was
He was on my bedroom wall and I knew he was waiting for me 🀣🀣🀣
