I watched this last night and rather enjoyed it. As a clergy widow I recognised much of parish life in the storyline. I wasn't expecting to like this drama but I'm very much looking forward to the next episode.

I have read the Richard Cole books and thought this was a good story.

Not too sure about the casting, as is often the case, you get your own idea of what the characters look like.

Amanda Redman doesn’t fit my vision of the mother, or the chap playing the lord of the manor, but we shall see how it all progresses.

Sounds interesting. Which channel?

Calendargirl Wed 08-Oct-25 06:58:03

It’s Channel 5, 9-10pm, Tuesday evenings.

I am glad to see Matthew Lewis back on the screen. Perhaps it's my age but there is a place for the more gentle thrillers.

Can’t believe I missed it - thought it started next week and sat through a much watched Poirot instead!
I’ll try to catch up on it.

Enjoyed it, looking forward to next week's. That village looked so beautiful, apparently it's in Shropshire.

Boz Wed 08-Oct-25 09:18:30

Its shot in Worfield and nearby Claverley and Bridgnorth in Shropshire. All my haunts. Beautiful part of the Country.

Esmay Wed 08-Oct-25 09:24:06

I missed it .
It certainly sounds like the sort of thing that appeals to me .

Murder before Evensong? Weird juxtaposition there for me...

Aldom Wed 08-Oct-25 09:43:44

Boz I agree, the scenery is lovely. I lived in Shropshire for very many years. I left for family reasons, fourteen years ago. Now that my family have returned to Shropshire I shall soon be back too.

I enjoyed the book so have been looking forward to the TV adaptation. I’m glad it didn’t disappoint.

Looking forward to the next episode.

I really enjoyed this, but didn't have high expectations as I wasn't keen on the book. I'm looking forward to following it.

Aldom Wed 08-Oct-25 10:19:30

henetha, I wasn't expecting much having seen the trailers on TV.
So pleased I didn't allow them to put me off watching.

henetha Wed 08-Oct-25 10:32:51

I agree, Aldom. Much better than anticipated.

I really enjoyed it. Like old school Miss Marple. Did you notice it was Richard Coles on the loud haler introducing the things at the show?

Allira Wed 08-Oct-25 10:52:59

I haven't read the books so have no preconceptions about characters.

It was very enjoyable, if a bit slow, and I thought Amanda Redman was very good as overbearing mother!

As soon as it started I said to DH "oh good, it's set in Shropshire or Staffordshire, I recognise the kinds of villages, buildings and scenery." It makes a change from the Cotswolds or Norfolk.
I think some of it is filmed in Warwickshire too.

Something to look forward to on dark evenings.

No, I didn't.
Well done, Miss Marple!

Witzend Wed 08-Oct-25 10:57:46

If it’s anything like the old Miss Marples (Joan Hickson only) I’ll certainly be looking out for it.,

I hope you will be happy here. I love its beauty and it accessibility to the Midland cities and the gateway to Wales.

Aldom Wed 08-Oct-25 11:10:48

I used to love the old Miss Marples.
I have happy memories of my husband and I settling down with a glass of wine to enjoy the stories.

Aldom Wed 08-Oct-25 11:13:04

Boz let me know if you want to meet for coffee in Shrewsbury sometime in
the next couple of months. smile

Visgir1 Wed 08-Oct-25 12:44:16

I read the book and thought it was a bit slow.
At the time I thought it would be perfect if transfer to a TV series.
The casting is good, last night was promising, hope it doesn't tip into another "Granchester"

I quite enjoyed Murder before Evensong, but it’s not very original. Echoes of Poirot, Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple, etc.
Did anyone else think that some of the costumes were rather old-fashioned for 1988? 🤔 I did notice a child wearing a shell suit (I had a couple of those - very comfy!) but some of the adult clothes were more reminiscent of the 50s/60s. My Mum would have been around the same age as Amanda Redman’s character, but she didn’t dress like that!

I loved the book and really enjoyed the tele programme. A bit of a cosy crime really. Thought the characterisation on the programme was as authentic as the book
