I loved this absolutely splendid series, and am I bit surprised to see I'm the first to mention it . D?id anyone else watch ?I had read the book which I found very good indeed.

On my watch list Westendgirl 😊

Just took a look at a trailer on YouTube.

Looks worth watching......

I can't begin to imagine what it was like to be judged just by your religion.

About all I know about the Irish situation is that I still don't understand why the country is divided like it is and I feel proud of the fact that Irish women that were denied abortions could nip over to England for them and we helped them out and did them.

I shall certainly try and catch up with this. Thanks westendgirl .

I've watched two episodes, I'll go back to it, but I do find the whole sectarian issue so utterly depressing how human beings can be so hateful to each other because of their religion. Although I know much of that's underpinned in the way catholics were and no doubt still are treated as second class citizens in their own country.

Gillian Anderson played the part of the alcoholic mother very well I thought.

Yes i watched and enjoyed it very much although some parts were incredibly sad. A real love story in a very troubled time.

In a similar vein Say Nothing, which was originally on, I think, Netflix, is going to be shown on Ch4 soon. It was programme of the year on my favourite podcast, Must Watch last year.

Trespasses is our list, MrJ left Belfast 25 years ago to come here, has family in the North and South.

Ooh - do tell us when that one turns up too.

Watched the first episode and that was enough. Very one sided view of the times. Nasty protestants and Soldiers .
Dark and depressing.

Greenfinch Fri 14-Nov-25 20:15:21

Not for me after all. Struggling with the Irish accents and decided it wasn’t worth the effort.

Tenko Fri 14-Nov-25 21:36:01

I’ve read the book and loved it. I’m always wary of a film /tv version of a book I’ve really enjoyed .

Gin Fri 14-Nov-25 22:11:52

We are just watching it. It brings back some very sad memories. I have to have the subtitles on as I find the accent very difficult, though my West Coast of Scotland OH has no problem, I suppose they are geographically close.

It is well acted I think it is balanced, the school priest as bigoted as the Proddies and soldiers.

kircubbin2000 Sat 15-Nov-25 10:26:45

We entertained some of the soldiers st home and they were lovely. They hid their guns under the sink while we ate. Their bodyguard was outside. It was very worrying for them as some of the younger ones had been invited out with some girls and they were afraid it might have been a trap.
History is being completely rewritten here which is sad as the young ones will never know the truth.

Greenfinch Sat 15-Nov-25 11:08:58

Good to get your insight kircubbin. It is a real shame that some will feel it is authentic.

westendgirl Sat 15-Nov-25 13:53:02

From what I have read it is quite authentic and gives a real sense of what was happening .
I appreciate Kircubbin's point but different things happened in different places.

Friends husband was shot dead. Dad on our school run also shot lucky no kids in the car. Parents held at gunpoint in house. Husband held at gunpoint and robbed and his assistant kidnapped.etc etc but as Michelle o neill says there was no alternative.Pure evil.

I read the book, which is excellent. I've just finished watching the series, it doesn't follow the book exactly but it's very moving and well acted. Definitely worth watching.

What a good looking man who played Michael. Haven't seen him before.

I absolutely agree with Kirkubbin2000 I live in a different part of NI not far from Belfast.

A friend's husband was also shot.
My husband while at work was injured in an explosion and off work for one year.
A 23 year old friend was shot at work. She, I believe, was the first female member of the Civilian Security Service to be shot.
I was standing at the City Hall after work on a dark wet wintery night in 1974 waiting on a bus. The area had just been deemed safe following a bomb warning. I was the only person at the bus stop when a bomb exploded in the shop behind me and I was showered in glass. Miraculously unhurt but in shock. Pre the days of mobile phones i started running for home. It took me 4 hours in the rain. Feet were blistered and I took off my shoes and walked barefoot. Got home and dh had been out roaming the streets looking for me.
I went to work as usual the next day. What happened was just what we dealt with. Didn't matter what religion we were. And in my daily life religion didn't matter either.
In later years there were times I drove past burning bonfires to cross the City to pick up my son from university.
I reiterate - this is what we did, just doing our best to live our lives in what was our normality.
I know there were areas that were sectarian but we did not all live like this. Unfortunately.some programs show us all as bigots and we are not.

Just watching it on catchup. Had a good mention on Must Watch. Think I’ll be binge watching it. Still haven’t watched Say Nothing though.

MayBee70 Wed 31-Dec-25 15:28:06

Binge watched it last night with it being only four episodes. Found it very good. Makes me think back to those times which were bad enough in England ( the place where I worked used to have bomb scares) and everyone in Birmingham knew someone that were casualties in the pub bombings so I can’t imagine what it must have been like in Belfast. A very frightening time. Will start on Say Nothing now.

It seems that he’s been in Downton Abbey ( which I don’t watch) and Becoming Elizabeth which is on Ch 4 catchup which I’m going to watch ( have been listening to a few podcasts about Elizabeth I recently).
