Why do contestants say their names- I’m Peter- when they are asked ‘ tell us about yourself, Peter’? Pointless.
Why do contestants applaud themselves? Rude,

I know someone who was a contestant on Countdown and they were told what to say and how to answer questions. They are told to only say please after the first letter, then consonant, vowel etc...for the other eight letters in the selection. Although not rude Rachel Riley disappeared between filming whereas Colin Murray, Susie Dent and the guest in Dictionary Corner Chris McCausland on this occasion chatted to everyone.

I was on Countdown recently, when Chris McCausland was in dictionary corner. I was not told what to say or how to answer questions, but was given guidance on what to wear. Rachel Riley and Susie Dent tend to disappear between games, as they have to change outfits and their dressing rooms are further away. Interestingly, Rachel kicks off her extremely high-heeled shoes as soon as filming finishes. They must be very uncomfortable! Colin is very chatty, and was in the green room where the contestants wait, chatting to everyone. Chris McCausland was lovely and friendly too.

It was said the Queen like watching it.

The number of times I shout at the telly during Pointless and other quizzes - "don't applaud yourself!!!

*Babs*03*, I once encountered Helena Bonham Carter in one of the ladies’ loos at the Albert Hall. She was with an elderly lady, maybe her mother, and they were discussing where to go afterwards. (‘ I don’t know, dear, where would you like to go?’)

Nobody was approaching her or looking as if they were bothered, but once outside in the corridor, she was
instantly surrounded by people wanting selfies!
She just stood there, expressionless, taking it, from I don’t know how many of these gormless types.
TBH I felt sorry for her.

I once saw Bill Nighy ordering a coke in a bar at a theatre in London. I didn’t approach him and neither did anyone else though the bar was pretty empty at that point, I was waiting for my friend to come out of the toilets. The bar tender a young lad was asked if he had any lemon because Bill said he had a sore throat, the lad just said a cursory no and got on with cleaning the bar, so Bill finished his coke and left a tenner under his glass without waiting to pay. No big diva act ‘do you know who I am’ from this lovely man who really is a gracious indivdual.

I agree eazybee . Pointless has been on for far too long . It's mediocracy has become very tedious.

My husband & I appeared on Pointless post Richard Osman - Lucy Porter was lovely & chatty whilst Alexander Armstrong (who I had worshipped from afar) was very aloof. He was all smiles & chat whilst the camera was on him & very distant when it wasn’t. We won the Pointless trophies but not the cash & he just said ‘well done’ as he walked off the set afterwards.

Too much talking from the hosts, originally it gave a platform to Richard Osman. The format is boring and tired now.

Allsorts Sun 23-Nov-25 07:21:45

I find Armstrong incredibly irritating, always trying to press home how intelligent he is. I very often have to mute him.

DrWatson Sun 23-Nov-25 06:47:10

Well Eazy, just dream up a new show and send it in to them, they'll be delighted. Oh, try the Osman show, BBC2 at 6pm. The games have some variety, and you'll be brighter than some of the minor celebs on the panel.

I still like The Chase and Countdown. I hate Pointless with a passion, it's the worst quiz ever. My favourite quiz is Tipping Point with the lovely Ben Shepherd.

Never watch it.
Another BBC programme long past its best.

The Chase on ITV is the same, every day of the week without a break. Both shows are boring and been on about five years too long.

dogsmother Sat 22-Nov-25 12:23:11

Oh I’m still in love pointless. But more so love the house of games. As for countdown it’s a daily habit too.

Alexander A : "We asked 100 people ....."

Who are these 100 people being approached to answer questions?

I did too Clawdy.

That's a shame, always thought he seemed so nice and warm!

I know a couple who were contestants on it and they were absolutely forbidden to approach Alexander Armstrong or be within a certain number of metres of him!

Once defeated, they were unable to mix with any other unsuccessful contestants. They had to take a few different outfits so that the wardrobe mistress could see what would look best against the colour of the set. This particular couple were winners but were forbidden from telling anyone at all before the recording was aired, especially on social media, on pain of the prize money being withdrawn.

I have heard he is quite an aloof man who loves to boast how intelligent he is and not very pleasant.
OTOH Richard Osman is supposed to be far more down to earth.

Only to be expected, if you think about it.

Oh, have gone off Armstrong now, I mean of course he doesn’t want to be mobbed by contestants wanting his autograph but that sounds a bit much.
Personally have seen a few famous types when out and about visiting family in London but I give them a wide berth, not for their sake but because I don’t think I would have much to say to them and vice versa. They are just strangers. The only famous person I did meet with my starry eyed daughter who was studying Astro physics, was Stephen Hawking at Cambridge, he was a sweetheart, very patient and had a wicked sense of humour.

I’ve been to a recording of Pointless. Alexander Armstrong did not acknowledge the audience at all and was only interested in his phone when not talking to contestants. Quite disappointing.

Sadgrandma Thu 20-Nov-25 21:33:35

Why does he have to say thank you very much ’indeed’ every time. So annoying.
