I like to watch something light in bed to help me sleep. I like light detective series and old films . Any suggestions?

I tried hamish Macbeth but didn’t like it.
Will look at brokenwood.

It's not the content of the news that puts me to sleep rather the drone of the voices.

Labradora Sun 21-Dec-25 17:45:11

I go to sleep listening to World Service news. I have always found a voice in the background soothing ( I lived alone for about twenty years) so now when I don't (currently) live alone I find I can't shake the Radio habit.

Agree Seaside Hotel is a fabulous watch.

I try to watch something light and funny on tv before I go to bed. I record programmes I want to watch and QI extra or Would I lie to you, do lighten up my mood however bad the news is.

Brokenwood?

Midsummer Murders/ The Archers but in New Zealand.
Very gentle and humorous.even though someone’s been murdered😬

I fell asleep last night listening to the Backlisted podcast about A Christmas Carol. It’s my current favourite podcast and even though it’s quite serious about the books it reviews it also makes me laugh out loud more than any other podcast I listen to. Which sometimes isn’t a good thing when you’re trying to get to sleep. If I have the tv on I often watch Wild Earth which just shows you animals in South Africa; it’s on Ch91 on my tv but on another tv Ch 91 is ‘adult stuff’ which is embarrassing as I’ve recommended Ch91 to several people recently blush.

I do not have a TV in the bedroom but occasionally watch something on my tablet.
What helps me fall asleep is a star projector, it shines on the ceiling and has a timer in the settings. I lie and watch the nebulae changing colour and the stars twinkling and always fall asleep before it switches off.
DS and DIL bought it for me when DH died, I was unable to sleep and was keeping the light on all night which we thought was not good.

I find most of the evening dramas have too much violence for me. If I do watch they keep me awake, so no recommendations from me.
My favourite light hearted Christmas film is The Holiday which was on BBC2 last Sunday, so will be available on the iplayer.

The trouble is for me I get hooked on a series and think just one more episode until in the end I’m awake half the night watching tv in bed, I’m currently hooked on RFDS

Scotlands Christmas Home of the Year is on bbc catchup…

I like Harry Wild. It’s on U - Jane Seymour as an amateur detective in Dublin. It’s light and very watchable.

Can't watch TV to sleep. For me it's a cup of Horlicks with a biscuit then read a book for about 20 minutes and that's me asleep for the next 8 hours.

georgiejg Mon 15-Dec-25 17:13:28

Hope street is a nice easy watch.

posset Mon 15-Dec-25 16:32:47

Try a cosy crime - U & Drama usually specialise in these. I love Father Brown, even though the plots are preposterous! Alternatively, programmes such as Countryfile or Kingdom or any wildlife subject always makes me feel good.

FranP Mon 15-Dec-25 16:18:56

If you want easy, happy go for A Place in the Sun. Me I am hooked on Grimm, so staying up past bedtime

sandye Mon 15-Dec-25 16:18:55

I have just watched for the umpteenth time, The Bishops Wife on you tube. love it.

Babamaman Mon 15-Dec-25 14:06:07

Try a calming podcast
You don’t have to watch
Just lay back close your eyes and listen to people chatting / it’s lovely
Or alternatively if you have a DAB radio tune into BOOM radio - lovely classic popular music
Good luck
Sleep well
(Wish I could)😬🥴

crazyH Mon 15-Dec-25 00:56:26

Yes. - I have to watch something to send me off to sleep. Just closing my eyes and trying to sleep, doesn’t work for me.

Oh yes.... the dresses, the furniture, the houses, such style, I rarely mind having seen a good story before anyway.

MollyNew Sun 14-Dec-25 23:05:10

Poirot with David Suchet is always worth a watch, I find. Even though I might know the story, the acting is so good and the production values were high in those days too.

Wyllow3 Sun 14-Dec-25 21:53:54

I listen/watch this tropical waves/sea video and pretend I am there as the waves gently splash

If if I awake and something is troubling me I'll go for music and try to concentrate on the lovely images, like this

I listen to Alexa reading me one of my Kindle books and set a sleep timer . If I have not fallen asleep before it finishes I just start her reading again. It is like a old friend reading to me each night.
