I like to watch something light in bed to help me sleep. I like light detective series and old films . Any suggestions?

Seaside Hotel - but it has subtitles.

Why watch something if you want to sleep though? I find this confusing as surely you have to keep your eyes open?
Could you maybe try radio or an audio book?

I watch TV, with subtitles, to aid falling asleep.
I'm trying to think why that works and just audio doesn't, as l listen to the radio until l want to sleep then put a TV programme on my phone. l must need the visual imagery.

Perhaps it's a bit like taking a child out in the car when you want to overstimulate a child to sleep!
Too much going on with the TV!
grin

Anyway, I love Seaside Hotel (on 4)
Very calming, beautiful camerawork and great characters (including stock ones).
Also, lots of episodes over several series!

I just find it works for me.
I’ll look for seaside hotel. I use subtitles a lot anyway

It works for me as well. I often watch an old Midsomer Murders or Foyles War on ITV3 until I feel my eyes going. I rarely get to the end but that doesn’t matter because I’ve seen them all before. 😂
Reading tends to wake me up. It’s more of an afternoon pleasure and I’ve never really got on with audio books.

I listen to Alexa reading me one of my Kindle books and set a sleep timer . If I have not fallen asleep before it finishes I just start her reading again. It is like a old friend reading to me each night.

I listen/watch this tropical waves/sea video and pretend I am there as the waves gently splash

If if I awake and something is troubling me I'll go for music and try to concentrate on the lovely images, like this

Poirot with David Suchet is always worth a watch, I find. Even though I might know the story, the acting is so good and the production values were high in those days too.

Wyllow3 Sun 14-Dec-25 23:52:27

Oh yes.... the dresses, the furniture, the houses, such style, I rarely mind having seen a good story before anyway.

Yes. - I have to watch something to send me off to sleep. Just closing my eyes and trying to sleep, doesn’t work for me.

Babamaman Mon 15-Dec-25 14:06:07

Try a calming podcast
You don’t have to watch
Just lay back close your eyes and listen to people chatting / it’s lovely
Or alternatively if you have a DAB radio tune into BOOM radio - lovely classic popular music
Good luck
Sleep well
(Wish I could)😬🥴

I have just watched for the umpteenth time, The Bishops Wife on you tube. love it.

FranP Mon 15-Dec-25 16:18:56

If you want easy, happy go for A Place in the Sun. Me I am hooked on Grimm, so staying up past bedtime

posset Mon 15-Dec-25 16:32:47

Try a cosy crime - U & Drama usually specialise in these. I love Father Brown, even though the plots are preposterous! Alternatively, programmes such as Countryfile or Kingdom or any wildlife subject always makes me feel good.

Hope street is a nice easy watch.

Can't watch TV to sleep. For me it's a cup of Horlicks with a biscuit then read a book for about 20 minutes and that's me asleep for the next 8 hours.

Dempie55 Mon 15-Dec-25 18:31:41

I like Harry Wild. It’s on U - Jane Seymour as an amateur detective in Dublin. It’s light and very watchable.

Vintagegirl Mon 15-Dec-25 21:59:29

Fraser on All4

Scotlands Christmas Home of the Year is on bbc catchup…

Lesley60 Wed 17-Dec-25 07:24:06

The trouble is for me I get hooked on a series and think just one more episode until in the end I’m awake half the night watching tv in bed, I’m currently hooked on RFDS

shysal Wed 17-Dec-25 09:22:15

I find most of the evening dramas have too much violence for me. If I do watch they keep me awake, so no recommendations from me.
My favourite light hearted Christmas film is The Holiday which was on BBC2 last Sunday, so will be available on the iplayer.

I do not have a TV in the bedroom but occasionally watch something on my tablet.
What helps me fall asleep is a star projector, it shines on the ceiling and has a timer in the settings. I lie and watch the nebulae changing colour and the stars twinkling and always fall asleep before it switches off.
DS and DIL bought it for me when DH died, I was unable to sleep and was keeping the light on all night which we thought was not good.
