Keira Knighley…Waitrose ad.

I’ve never really rated Keira Knightley as an actress until she was in this years Waitrose adverts ( although I must admit to really liking her in Prude and Prejudice the more times I see it). Very good comic timing imo. Which also reminds me of the fact that I never thought Bill Nighy was a good actor ( he was always Bill Nighy playing Bill Nighy) until he played a giant squid in Pirates of the Caribbean. ( just needed to get that off my chest as I’ve been thinking about it ever since the Christmas ads started). I’m sure there are other roles that must have made me look at certain actors or actresses in a different light ( John Wayne in True Grit perhaps…)

Brendan Fraser made 3 films in the Mummy franchise and came across as an ok actor playing his character for laughs.
A few years last he played the lead role in The Whale and delivered such an emotional, strong performance that resulted in him rightfully winning the Oscar for Best Actor.

I can’t stand the actor in the Keira Knightly advert he always looks as if he needs a good wash to me. The first thing I thought when I saw the advert is what does she see in him

Actors really do surprise us sometimes when we see their full range. Years ago I'd enjoyed Kathy Burke in comedy, but it wasn't till I saw her in Mr Wroe's Virgins that I realised what a brilliant actor she is. Then she followed it up with Nil By Mouth. Timothy Spall was the same; someone reliable who turned up in all sorts of prodactions, but it wasn't until he appeared in Stephen Poliakoff's Shooting The Past that I saw how mesmerising he can be.

It’s Joe Wilkinson. He’s a stand up comedian/writer. He wrote and starred in The Cockfields a series that someone on gransnet introduced to me (thanks, I loved it). I know what you mean, though. He does look as though his beard contains a whole ecosystem and he’s a bit wooden. But he probably wrote it.

I loved Shooting the Past…

We have loved every one of Poliskoff’s plays - shooting the past was my absolute favourite..
On the whole, I don’t much like Knightly, but think the couple in the Waitrose ad utterly charming.

BlueBelle Sat 20-Dec-25 06:06:36

Don’t think I ve seen the Waitrose ad. I have got blanking out when adverts come on down to a tee and although I know the name I don’t think I d recognise Keira Knightly if I fell over her 🤣🤣🤣

That’s the whole point of the ad TwiceAsNice that she is Keira Knightly and he (Joe Wilkinson) is playing a very awkward, not very confident chap called Phil. He can’t see that she likes him and doesn’t think for a minute think she’d be interested in someone like him.
I think it’s one of the better Christmas ads this year.

Calendargirl Sat 20-Dec-25 06:49:50

I’m afraid that in real life, not Waitroseland, Keira Knightley wouldn’t fancy Joe Wilkinson in a month of Sundays,

Georgesgran Sat 20-Dec-25 07:09:39

Exactly Calendargirl. That’s the whole point of the Ad.

Well, if it gives hope to any Joe lookalikes out there, I suppose it’s done its job.

But at least with Notting Hill, which was a similar premise, Hugh Grant was more fanciable for Julia Roberts.

Ad did nothing for me, found it unrealistic.

The Maxwell House couple back in the day were far more believable.

Calendar girl I used to work with a guy like "Phil" and he always had the most glamorous attractive girlfriends. One day after a drink the other guys asked him how he did it. He said the most attractive women dont always get much attention as men think she wouldn't be interested so he always made a beeline for the most unattainable woman, didn't always work but it did often enough.

I was never sure if he was having them on.

Dottydots Sat 20-Dec-25 14:32:12

Poor Phil does look rather a mess. He's probably a lovely chap though. I think I would have to take him home, stick him in the bath and then chop off his messy hair and beard. Perhaps then we could get passionate

JamesandJon33 Sat 20-Dec-25 15:34:24

Oh, I quite like a rough , hairy chap.

keepingquiet Sat 20-Dec-25 15:37:27

I find the ad annoying- it is so fake and forced.

merlotgran Sat 20-Dec-25 15:39:39

I’m amazed at so many people taking this ad seriously.
Surely it’s just a bit of fun?

kittylester Sat 20-Dec-25 15:56:38

Agreeing with you, again, merlot. I've just watched it and loved it.

Yup it reminded me of the Maxwell House ad but without the entertainment value.
Nothing against Keira Knightley or the bloke , just doesn't work for me.

I loved Shooting the Past…

Versatile Timothy Spall took over the role of the Duke of Norfolk in Wolf Hall due to the previous actor's death.

He was magnificently bitter and vindictive towards Thomas Cromwell.

Yes, it's meant to be funny, isn't it! I like it.
