Call The Midwife.

Thought the Christmas special was dire.

As if they would all be flying off to Hong Kong. Who was paying for the air fares?

Interspersed with a snowy Christmas carnival back in Poplar, the midwives on the float looked like they had stepped out of a Boney M video.

Plus Sister Monaco Joan, who has cheated death on numerous occasions, suddenly coming out of retirement and being at the forefront of a complicated birth, which even the locum GP couldn’t deal with.

And of course, Midwife Trixie stepping into the breach in clinic and bossing one and all about in her posh little voice.

Another follow up tonight…..

I was just about to start my midwifery in 1973, yes it is a bit twee but it is purely for entertainment not teaching. I love it!

👏👏

Is Sister Monica Joan finally going to meet her maker this series?

I think next week is the last in the current series so expect a tear jerker!

My aunts were definitely dressed like Violet, my mum was a little more daring and had her skirts about 1 inch above her knee. If you think the accents are posh watch something like Face the Music or plays from that time. The way the men talk to the women is extraordinarily

In the 70’s my Mum only wore a hat to church. But my gran always wore one of her many dressy hats going out. If she visited someone’s home she removed her coat but her hat remained firmly in place secured by a hat pin.

Yes, Geoffrey and Beryl used a phrase (can’t remember what it was) that wasn’t around in 1971, I’m sure.

I also think Beryl is menopausal.

Timothy (Dr Turner Junior) still looks a bit wide eyed and naive somehow.

Also don’t think Beryl would be launching into bright red lipstick, manicures, hair do’s, so soon after leaving the convent, even under Trixie’s expert tutelage.

Is Sister Monica Joan finally going to meet her maker this series?

She looked like a ventriloquist dummy 😂

Someone also said that someone else should 'lean into a problem'.

MartavTaurus Mon 02-Mar-26 13:54:09

His awful gurning grins and weird facial expressions make him look like the sort of doctor you would see only as a last resort, if there was no one else available. (Of course, thereisonly him, he has the monopoly).

😂 😂 Me too!

I think she is Calendargirl which makes me wonder if this is going to be the final series.

No, there’s the final one to get through next year, I think.

You make it sound as if you'll be tied to your chair and forced to watch it, Calendargirl 😂😂😂

Reading this thread has made me realise we missed last night's episode. Now, how did that happen! 😲

Allira Mon 02-Mar-26 14:57:57

And the week before 😲😲

So tonight we are in 1971. I was just about leaving school but no young lad would have worn that big overcoat that Timothy is wearing and older ladies weren’t wearing stuff like Mrs Buckle or Miss Higgins.

I don’t think the language that Beryl and Geoffrey use is right for that time either.

In my experience they did dress like that. My Nan was dressing like Violet into the 1980s!

I don't remember my MIL dressing any differently than that for years after that date.
My DM did break out and buy a trouser suit once.

Calendargirl Mon 02-Mar-26 15:07:42

Well Allira, if you forgot to watch the last two episodes, I’m afraid you don’t sound like a dedicated CTM fan. 😂

I watch it religiously every week.

😇

(There’s not much else on at 8pm).

We had visitors, Calendargirl
Can't inflict it on them.

We'll find it on iPlayer. 😁

Just watching and commentating (as usual).

DD said "You should be on Gogglebox, Mum!" 😁

GrannyGravy13 Sun 08-Mar-26 21:04:23

I cried 🤷‍♀️

GrannyGravy13

I cried 🤷‍♀️

I cried (a bit) when Beryl said she was going back to being Sister Veronica.
And sang Abide with Me.

Grandmadinosaur Sun 08-Mar-26 21:12:50

Yes a very emotional episode.

It got me when Sister Evangelina came to guide Sister Monica Joan 😢

merlotgran Sun 08-Mar-26 21:15:12

I blubbed throughout.
It was very well done.

Smileless2012 Sun 08-Mar-26 21:16:42

Oh that got to me too Grandmadinosaur.

Grandma70s Sun 08-Mar-26 21:18:17

Well, that episode certainly packed everything in. Birth, marriage, death, the lot.

When does it return?

gillgran Sun 08-Mar-26 21:21:25

A very emotional episode.

Sillymoo Sun 08-Mar-26 21:21:30

Accirding to mumsnet the Radio Times says the prequel is going to be around Christmas time. There's also a film and a new series.

MartavTaurus Sun 08-Mar-26 21:28:35

OMG, not many of the episodes made me cry, but that one had everything. The acting was excellent, everyone one of them made their parts individual. Then the music, yes, Abide with me and Faurés Requiem.

I hope those two spinsters set up their Miss Demeanours enterprise!

kittylester Sun 08-Mar-26 21:31:03

DH says I have a really daft look on my face while I watch it.

The scan scene was interesting as I had forgotten till then that I was the first person to have a scan in our local hospital and the press were there. My stomach was in the paper.

Primrose53 Sun 08-Mar-26 21:52:09

I cried and got upset so left the room. My Mum adored the hymn Abide With Me and seeing Sister Monica Joan fading away reminded me of her final few days.

My son asked why Cyril was not allowed in to see the scan but I missed that bit.

kittylester Sun 08-Mar-26 22:03:49

Men just weren't allowed in. I suppose having babies was a woman's department.
