I like this book and the mini series staring Jenny Seabrook is being re-made starring Brenda Blethyn in the main role and Jo Joyner as her daughter, two of my favourite actors and will look forward to it.

Main role shared so BB only place the older role.

Brenda Blethyn and Jo Joyner are actresses not actors.

Will watch it as it’s so long since I read the book, years ago. Can’t remember much about the book but I know I enjoyed it as I read a few books of hers after.

I wonder what Barbara Taylor Bradford would have thought about changing Blackie's name? Is it offensive to say Black Beauty? Anna Sewell wrote that many moons ago, before all this PC rubbish. The world has gone mad 😡.

Black wasn't used as an insult blackie was. You aren't comparing line with like.

Allira

I was answering ferry23'post.

So you did know?

I also can't believe they changed Blackie's name!

Poor old Liam Neeson's been "cancelled".

Heaven forbid anyone who is actually a blacksmith having to appear on channel 4. Will they now be a "personofcoloursmith"?

The character hasn’t been cancelled he is being called Mac which is a short form of his surname.

Language evolves, and words become unacceptable, nothing new in this.

I didn't say the character had been cancelled.

I think it's quite rude to change the name of characters when you're supposed to be adapting the book for TV. It's been done before without changing character names.

Allira I think you know there's nothing wrong with blacksmith, blackie is different.

I get tired of remakes and sometimes remakes of remakes.

Witzend Thu 12-Mar-26 12:14:39

According to a review in today’s Times, it’s ’like a posh panto’.
But he does give it three stars, and adds, ‘But panto’s fun, right? (Oh yes it is!).’

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 12-Mar-26 12:08:42

Sounding? Oh, for an edit button!!

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 12-Mar-26 12:07:58

Yes, Jenny Seagrove! I didn't think Seabrook sounding right 😉

My Greatxsomething Uncle was a blacksmith.
Should I change his title in the family history?

NotaGrannie Thu 12-Mar-26 12:05:29

It was Jenny Seagrove who was in the brilliant original series

loved it

not keen on this new version, doubt I'll continue watching

Shelflife Thu 12-Mar-26 11:54:53

Bit disappointed. Expected a more polished production. As for carrying a dying mother out onto the moor!!!!
Nice to see the Cow and Calf rocks though. Will watch again - it may improve.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 12-Mar-26 11:39:00

I loved Jenny Seabrook in this years ago. I didn't watch last night, I couldn't imagine Brenda Blethyn being as good, I don't like her squeaky voice 🫤.

Each to their own, I quite like a bit of “mindless” TV so that I can just completely chill and not concentrate too much flowers

Oh so do I, like I posted up thread I do not want to be mentally challenged or educated every time I plonk myself in front of the tellybox 🤷‍♀️

Sarnia

I have seen the trailer and what a transformation for Brenda Blethyn. A big step up from her mac and hat. Wonderful actress.

I so agree, one of my very favourite actresses.

Cossy Thu 12-Mar-26 10:56:53

I cannot wait!

eddiecat78 Thu 12-Mar-26 10:54:04

Ironically I thought it lacked substance

I watched last night, looks like it’s going to be an easy series, I do not need to be mentally challenged each time the TV is turned on.

I read the book when it was first published (1979) and have forgotten the minutiae of the story.
