I've heard of it obviously and had a vague idea of the story but wow what amazing acting from each and every one of those boys.

Grandmabatty Mon 09-Feb-26 05:43:32

I started to watch it but stopped after twenty minutes. The acting was great and the plot stuck to the original book pretty much which is why I stopped! I know this book inside out and used to teach it. Because I know what happens, I'm not sure i can watch it.

eazybee Mon 09-Feb-26 06:29:44

I haven't read it since the mid 1960s but I remember the outcome well. I thought it was a brilliant production, with Piggie astonishing , as were the rest of the boys, but I agree, it will be difficult to watch.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 09-Feb-26 07:12:40

I agree with the other posters, good acting, but I will not watch the rest.

I remember being upset when I read the book at school afterwards we were shown the original black & white film.

Sadgrandma Mon 09-Feb-26 07:20:09

Like others I have read the book so don’t think I can watch it.
I read that the boy playing Piggy has had two kidney transplants, one donated by his dad, which later failed, and the other from his mum so he’s done really well.

Greenfinch Mon 09-Feb-26 07:21:44

My sentiments exactly. It is so well acted that I don’t want to watch any more knowing what is to come. I expect I will though as DH is enjoying it.

No plans here to watch it. I recall being very upset by the book, no need to re experience it. I also read about the young man playing Piggy, what a courageous family.

tanith Mon 09-Feb-26 07:27:28

Same as others I read it at school and remember how upset I was so I won’t watch despite the reviews.

GrannyIvy Mon 09-Feb-26 07:30:42

I didn’t feel able to watch this as remember the story well from school days and found it upsetting.

TerriBull Mon 09-Feb-26 07:52:41

I thought it was just me, deciding not to watch it because the conclusion is too upsetting, but that seems to be the overall feeling on this thread. I'm sure the acting is great and having seen pictures of the boy chosen to play Piggy looks like spot on casting.

dragonfly46 Mon 09-Feb-26 07:57:48

I studied the book to death so do not feel I can watch it.

Gingster Mon 09-Feb-26 08:04:12

I went with the school to watch the original film, aged 15. 1965.
I remember being unsettled by it.
I watched it last night and thought the acting was first class, especially Piggy. It’s amazing how these youngsters can perform so brilliantly.

I might carry on, I’ll see.

Esmay Mon 09-Feb-26 08:07:21

I read the book and have seen the film twice
It shook me to the core.
I found it upsetting.
However ,
it is a brilliant film and worth watching .
The acting is superb.

I hadn’t realised it was on the BBC. Saw some of the publicity and assumed it would be on a channel I don’t subscribe to. I must watch it if it’s by Jack Thorne. With music by Hans Zimmer. And I do like the way these series are not going straight onto iplayer as it stops me binge watching( and not getting anything done).

ViceVersa Mon 09-Feb-26 09:18:57

I've read the book and watched the original film, but I must be very much in the minority because I didn't find it upsetting. Unsettling, yes - and food for thought, but isn't that the whole point?

Smileless2012 Mon 09-Feb-26 09:19:29

Having read the book, we didn't watch as the book was upsetting and disturbing enough.

Grantanow Mon 09-Feb-26 09:25:06

I read the book yeaes ago at school. Don't need to see the film.

keepingquiet Mon 09-Feb-26 09:29:17

I know the book but haven't read it cover to cover. I have seen the film but apart from the boy with the glasses I don't remember much else about it.

It is tough and challenging, as great writing should be. Whether it is judged good telelvision, I suspect not by the comments here.

I watched the first episode- it didn't grip me to desire to watch the second but I may give it another go. I found it very 'bitty' and disjointed, and rather emotionally detached. I couldn't warm to the characters but maybe that's the point?

As a child I heard a 1950s radio version, was appalled and haunted by it. A few years later I read it to try to make sense of some incidents. Then in the early 1980s teaching bottom band 15 year olds I was asked to teach it. After a couple of weeks I was told we need not do it as it was too difficult for them. By then the pupils were greatly enjoying the book and wanted to carry on so we did. I wrote to the author telling him how keen they were to finish the book and had an appreciative reply.
About 25 years later my grandson’s school did a stage version and he was delighted to be cast as Jack the evil choir boy!
I didn’t watch it on tv last night, after a harrowing episode of ‘Call the Midwife’ I couldn’t face it but dived into an early Bridgerton (which unfortunately had a flash back to Hyacinth’s difficult birth!!) I probably will watch on catch up when I am ready.

LadyGracie Mon 09-Feb-26 15:50:57

I read the book at school and I wouldn’t want to see the film.

EllieAnne Mon 09-Feb-26 18:00:20

I watched it only vaguely remembering the book. I do know that there is unpleasant stuff to come but will try to stick with it.

ginny Mon 09-Feb-26 18:02:31

I haven’t seen the film. I studied the book for English Lit GCE , which I passed with a high grade but Weirdly I don’t remember anything about it other than them being on an island.
I have just watch the first episode and agree the acting is so good. I still can’t recall what happens next.

Mollygo Mon 09-Feb-26 18:07:41

Read the book at school. Won’t be watching the film.

harrysgran Mon 09-Feb-26 19:26:18
