Utterly fantastic. If you missed it last night on BBC 2 do find in iplayer. What a gem.

Can anyone tell me if the lady from the Open University who was in the last episode also appeared earlier in the series? I think she did but can't remember when. (I might just be confused as this actress is appearing in lots of things at the moment)

Loved the first and so far only series. Such a change to watch something so different. I had no idea where the story line was going. So imaginative. Shop assistants relieving their boredom by "teasing" customers grin as if that would ever happen smile The characters were so much more relatable, gentle and kinder than are usual in comedy series. Well done Mr Crook.

Mackenzie Crook is a genius.

Without giving too much away for those who haven’t watched the whole series yet and the conversation between Michael and Kacey on the kerb, I can’t see any future series straying from the local area. If it did, it would lose all the sub-characters and how they interact with Michael. It wouldn’t be the same without. He will have to come to some arrangement with Roy.

I’m guessing more homunculi growing and more of them. Dad Brian said there were six and we’ve only seen three. We didn’t see the monk, the knight or the peasant. What wasn’t explained or shown (I don’t think) was whether each homunculi has the ability to prophesize different things.

I'm on episode 5, I find it a bit depressing for some reason, it feels claustrophobic (like Michaels house!) but yes I heard more series too.

MayBee70 Sun 15-Feb-26 00:47:05

My daughter says they want to do three series.

Oh I really loved 'Small Prophets'. What great characters. I've just seen the last episode and I'm so sorry it's over. I can't see how it could actually be continued but I hope it will be.

Bukkie

I watched the first episode because I love The Detectorists so much and was glad I did. If you haven't watched The Detectorists please do because it is magical. I have watched it many times. I will never ever forget the first time I saw Lance and Andy try Sheila's lemonade.

A lovely series. Sheila and her slightly blustering but kind husband ,are wonderful.

Those little creatures in bottles would have terrified me as a child.

Just had to add my praise for this wonderful series. The casting is fantastic. Loved all the characters especially Michael Palin. The story telling is very clever and completely engaging.
Thank you @Colls for the recommend. A gem it absolutely is!
Hope we don't have to wait too long for a second series.

Thanks for all the reviews ! We were undecided about watching but we will now.

Loved it, seen it all and waiting for the next series now.

I thought I'd gone back in time to when people actually cared about what they wrote and produced.

The small details and minor characters are excellent.

Aveline Thu 12-Feb-26 14:15:30

What a good programme this is. I'm so enjoying it. I've only seen the first four episodes but looks forward to seeing them all. A refreshing change for BBC.

The thing about the Brazil nuts actually happened to a district nurse at the surgery where I used to work. The same patient was once boiling a rabbit , innards skin and all, in a pan on the stove when she visited!

Film Club recently on BBC also featured a ‘boy on a bike’. I hadn’t thought about Michael looking like a wizard. And I’d spotted a plot line that my ex hadn’t; there are so many levels to the series. The young girl kept reminded me of Chris Packhams step daughter, the one who’s on Springwatch etc.

Graphite Thu 12-Feb-26 11:10:57

Exactly, Maybee. People can’t really talk about it here as some will only watch week by week.

What I will say is that I was surprised about the last episode about how King Homunculus behaved.

As for Michael looking too old and unkempt, his father is 90 so how old is he supposed to be? If someone is going to engage in alchemy then looking like a wizard seem entirely appropriate.

Anyway, Michael’s appearance gets him out of scrape in a later episode in a rather poignant exchange. Same with the young lad endlessly cycling around the close. People are drawn to Michael, even the annoying Brigham softens in the end.

MayBee70 Thu 12-Feb-26 10:50:55

It’s one of those series that you want people you know to watch it so you can talk about it and are scared to discuss it if they haven’t for fear of giving anything away and ruining it for them. I’m sure my ex came round yesterday because he knew I’d watched it and wanted to talk about it ( and he’s someone who rarely watched tv programmes). Can’t wait for my daughter to watch it so we can chat about it.

Utterly Brilliant, every character well written and believable. I think I recognise my neighbours. Detectorists is infinitely re-watchable, but this is even better. The set designers absolutely got the scenes spot on. Michael Palin, as Dad, genius casting. I’m going to love this.

DH & I binge watched it. The chocolate brazils. smile Loved it. Also loved The Detectorists. Lovely easy viewing. Escapism at it's best.

Sueinkent Wed 11-Feb-26 22:44:19

Retread

Enjoying it too 🤗

However I really hope his really irritating male colleague who keeps cackling and shrieking and shouting his name doesn’t appear beyond Episode 2! If he is meant to be irritating, it’s working!

Oh I really like him. It makes me laugh out loud.

Usedtobeblonde Wed 11-Feb-26 22:24:17

Watched it all now and while it is so “fanciful “ it is so enjoyable.
I was very pleased when the words “ to be continued “ came up at the end.
We surely need a bit of escapism.

VANECAM Wed 11-Feb-26 21:25:16

“Have you been for your break?”

Oreo Wed 11-Feb-26 16:54:55

The folk type music accompanying the series is reminiscent of Detectorists too.
Am enjoying this tho not as much as Detectorists.
Wondering why the lead character has to look quite so old, and would he really be so unkempt after almost seven years?
Michael Palin is great as his Dad.

MayBee70 Wed 11-Feb-26 16:04:15

My ex husband dropped in this morning for a chat and he binge watched it last night, too. Just waiting for my daughter to watch it.
