Could I open a discussion on good films you’ve recently seen on Netflix, Prime, Disney + and mainstream tv including BBC IPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and 5 equivalents.
I spend so long scrolling through the films on the above apps, not knowing whether they were worth watching or not so I’m hoping folk on here can provide some recommendations.

misbehaviour, a film on iplayer is good (though I thin it might be a bit old)

I listen to Must Watch on BBC Sounds each week. They review several programmes on different channels and you can scroll back and find reviews from all of the podcasts they’ve done. This week they reviewed A Woman of Substance; one said it was a must Watch, another didn’t like it at all but she likes darker things and the shows host liked it too. I’ve got to know the reviewers so well over the years that if they say to avoid something I will. Also listeners email in about programmes they recommend. I now base my viewing around it.

If you don't mind subtitled films, I recently watched "I'm Your Man" on Channel 4. It is a German film but Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey) plays one of the two main characters. It is described as a sci fi comedy (which didn't sound that appealing to me but I gave it a go and thoroughly enjoyed it). I believe it won several awards.

Homeland. A series, absolutely brilliant.

I like Patience (Ch4). It’s police crime, set in York. Slightly different from the usual cops and murder plot because it focuses on an autistic woman called Patience who has a flair for solving crimes. Jessica Haynes plays the DI in the 2nd series - I still see her as Cheryl in the Royle Family! 🤣 No swearing! (Bonus).
Very similar to that is Professor T (ITV), played by Ben Miller as a genius Cambridge criminologist who helps the police.
A third favourite of mine is ‘Ludwig’ (David Mitchell). He’s another civilian who ends up accidentally helping the police. I believe there’s a second series coming soon.
I’ve just binge-watched ‘A Woman of Substance’. Apart from the cringe-worthy sex scenes, it’s a good story with a twist at the end. Echoes of Wuthering Heights and Upstairs Downstairs.

The quality of films on both are pretty dire, occasionally there is a good one, most likely it's an older classic. Best way to find a good film is to search you favorite actor, Idris Elba, Tom Cruise or whatever

Surely it depends on what your viewing tastes are?

I'm watching 'That Night' on Netflix and enjoying it. It's about three sisters. I don't want to describe too much as I don't want to give plot away. Worth at least a glance of episode 1 to see it it's what you like.

'I Swear' is excellent (about Tourettes)

"I Swear" on Netflix.

Yes, The Holdovers was an unexpected excellent film, I chanced upon it and so glad I did. Holdovers are students who have to stay in school over the holidays instead of going home.

Lemonred Sun 15-Mar-26 15:54:06

I don’t watch movies, as most series are better these days! But I recently watched The Salt path, yes I know it’s not true, but it was an enjoyable film, and I’d listened to podcasts pointing out the fiction of it.

Iwtwab12bow Sun 15-Mar-26 15:22:15

I swear, The Holdovers, A Man Called Otto, Gran Torino, F1, Conclave. All brilliant.

Mel1967

The Night Manager - I Player
Slow Horses - Apple
Patience - Channel 4 ( on the catch up app)

Disagree with Patience, which is an English language copy of the ORIGINAL French series ‘ Astrid. Murder in Paris ‘ which I much prefer. The 5th ? Series of which is on More 4 on Friday Nights a 9 pm … but best to watch from the beginning on the Ch. 4 app.

@pea007 I always look film reviews up on IMDB, and avoid anything less than a 5.

Greciangirl Sun 15-Mar-26 14:46:04

Watched I Swear last night on Netflix.

Best film I’ve seen in a long time.

It’s very sad and funny all at once.
It’s about a man who has Tourette’s syndrome.

True story and unbelievable.

Jojo1950 Sun 15-Mar-26 14:39:32

It was. Last day on Netflix today I think.?

WithNobsOnIt Sun 15-Mar-26 14:35:04

I know you don't like scrolling but there are loads of good older films you can watch on YouTube for free.

Puzzle on Netflix was good.

Train Dreams on Netflix is marvellous.

This film was great, I agree. I can also recommend the novella by Denis Johnson that it is based on.
