Could I open a discussion on good films you’ve recently seen on Netflix, Prime, Disney + and mainstream tv including BBC IPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and 5 equivalents.
I spend so long scrolling through the films on the above apps, not knowing whether they were worth watching or not so I’m hoping folk on here can provide some recommendations.

Could you give us an idea of what you’ve watched and liked.
I spend ages scrolling to put on my watch list.

Many of my evenings are spent scrolling for so long that I go to bed and haven't watched anything!

Tell us what sort of thing you like and what you don't like.

Well films like most things in life are subjective. Without knowing what you like, I'm going to recommend these anyway. Hearburn 1986 new on Netflix, I remember seeing it when it first came out, enjoyed it nearly as much the other day, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. The Holdovers lovely and poignant. We live in Time again a lovely film, The Dig archaelogical Anglo Saxon discovery at Sutton Hoo,featuring Ralph Fiennes, Netflix again. Those are off the top of my head, I'm sure I'll think of others.

TerriBull Thanks for mentioning Heartburn - I haven't seen that in years and it's so good. I still haven't watched the Holdovers, must get round to seeing it.

pea007 You'll have to give us an idea of the types of films or actors you like.

On Sky cinema, if you like serious dramas, Oppenheimer and Nuremburg are both excellent in my opinion. I also enjoyed Gladiator 2 - not as good as the first one but still worth a watch.

The Taste of Things , iplayer .

It's been on Netflix for a while, but Nyad was a standout for me. Annette Bening and Jodie Foster star.

pea007 Thu 12-Mar-26 19:57:18

I’m open to anything although must admit I’m not into Fantasy much.
I watched I Swear at the cinema a couple of months ago and see it’s now on Netflix; would totally recommend it as it’s the best film I’ve seen for a few years, although as has been mentioned it’s subjective but I’ll try any recommendations on here.

I also loved Nyad.

Although a series, not a film- I recently became completely engrossed in Love Story: JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Beautifully filmed. Such a tragic end to their young lives. Very well cast, (excepting I didn't like the portrayal of Jackie).

Netflix - The Perfect Neighbour - true crime but not gory at all, just sad all round. And, a lesson to be learned.

Belonging with Brenda Blethyn and Kevin Whateley, on Prime or free on YouTube. The best film I have seen in years.

The Taste of Things (French, subtitles BBC iPlayer)
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, (Channel 4)
The Great Escaper (BBC iPlayer)

Wasn’t this absolutely lovely?
A treat in every sense!

JamesandJon33 Fri 13-Mar-26 01:59:36

Yes, best thing I have seen in ages

I can recommend The Victim on Netflix. It was on ITV (I think) several years ago so may also be available elsewhere. It's very good.

Basgetti Fri 13-Mar-26 10:15:09

The Life of Chuck. Unlike any other film we’ve seen.

Mel1967 Fri 13-Mar-26 10:40:28

The Night Manager - I Player
Slow Horses - Apple
Patience - Channel 4 ( on the catch up app)

I do that as well ferry23 given up trying to find something which suits both my husband and me.
I keep saying I will cancel my subscription but I am watching Outlander and catching up with the episodes I missed. My husband really dislikes it.

The Railway Man, Netflix. Sad but beautiful .

I Recommend You To Watch:
The Lion Who Took a Woman’s Shape
If you’re looking for dark fantasy or horror inspiration, this would be an excellent place to start. “The Lion Who Took a Woman’s Shape” focuses on a woman whose daughter has been devoured by a lion. The lion decides to take the daughter’s place, stepping into her skin to pretend to be her, and the mother has to get rid of the lion and bring her daughter back.

Netflix…
The Devil All The Time , a film set in the mountains in North America.
Dark, a German series very quirky and well acted, about time shifts and several families within a village, I thought it was marvellous.
The Trip, a Scandi film, both gory and very funny.
Rogue Agent, a British film starring James Norton as a conman who pretends to be an MI5 officer, based on a true story.

Oreo Sat 14-Mar-26 10:11:39

Any of the Harlan Coben books now films.
Get Out, a film with twists you won’t see coming.

I am currently watching 'The a Word,' a series about a mother's struggle to first accept that her son has autism, and subsequently, to find help for him.

There are other themes woven in too, such as family tensions and bullying.

That was a really good film Oreo, The devil all the time. I tried it & wasn’t in the mood. Tried again & really loved it.
I was the same with Peaky blinders but glad I persevered.

I want to watch that New Dracula film 2025 called Dracula, the love story with the lovely Caleb Landry Jones. I can’t find what source it is on.
