Anyone watching? Quite enjoying it so far!

Cabowich Mon 23-Mar-26 19:40:21

I'm really enjoying it, too. It's a less steamy version of Bridgerton.

I've just watched the first five episodes, loved it, can't wait for the next five on 29th March 😀.

Yes really enjoying this but hated the fake wisteria in the garden near St Paul's. These set producers aren't gardeners are they!

Did they borrow it from the set of Grantchester? 😀

It also plays a role in Bridgerton, dangling outside the Bridgertons' London home, in reality the Ranger's House in Greenwich Park.

It must be getting dusty now!

Sorry to be pedantic but it grated with me when Cowper wasn’t pronounced as Cooper. Quite a blooper.

To my surprise (his favourite viewing usually being current depressing news!) dh suggested it last night - he knows I’m an Austen fan. I dislike anyone messing with Jane’s work, but we ended up binge watching the first 3 episodes. The girl who plays Mary is IMO an excellent actress.

I’ve already had a guess at what’s going to happen, but we shall see….

DH whose favourite thing is Science Fiction 😴 has absolutely loved this production as have I.

Yes, I looked this up a week or so ago. It wasn't until late 50s (?) I believe that opticians became officially recognized as a regulated profession in the UK. I think until then they were just seen as salesmen.

In the book the oculist and his son go to Longbourn. I doubt whether he would have been dark skinned or was it considered a lower status occupation at the time. Possibly.

In the television series Mrs. Bennett was very scathing about them "having a shop." Presumably him being "in trade" wasn't acceptable to her.

Aveline Sat 21-Mar-26 11:31:43

Me too. It really was OTT on Grantchester. However it seemed a better series this time.

loopyloo Sat 21-Mar-26 11:27:36

Allira, I wondered that!!

Boz Sat 21-Mar-26 11:20:54

The use of dark skinned actors is probably owing to Equity pressure towards inclusivity and to hold interest of dark skinned viewers.
I find it ridiculous and off-putting.

I'm reading the book and quite enjoying it as there are many references to passages in P&P.

I’ve just finished the book and think it’s an excellent adaptation, provided you accept that considerable liberties have been taken with the plot.
I think the book could have done with better editing, though, particularly in the early chapters but realise that if you write a spin-off based on a Jane Austen novel such as this, or Death Comes To Pemberley or The Ball At Longbourn etc you risk comparison and are unlikely to come out on top!
V enjoyable tv!

Though if we want to delve further, Ella B is half Italian! Father 🇮🇹
She does have a Latin look about her.

Useless information alert ........
Talking British. Did you know the Princess of Wales is related to Jane Austen?

Ah, how interesting. It's quite easy to imagine Katherine and William as Jane and Mr Bingley smile

I think I might have heard that (but forgotten it)

11th cousin, six times removed apparently 😁

Of course I did RosiesMawAgain. I foolishly thought you might have got my point though. Clearly not.

Your point being?

Just be relieved these days that the Bennet sisters are truthfully portrayed as white British.

Aveline

*SorryRosiesMawagain*. I just don't agree with you. This is now. Then was then and it wasn't right either. Maybe you'll be OK with a white Nelson Mandela obviously, it'll be 'acting' so that's OK with you.

You clearly didn’t read my post to the end @ Aveline
Hard as it may be for some, I think we have to look beyond skin colour unless it significantly impacts the plot - or if a real ie historical figure is being depicted

At the time of writing, as they say, Nelson Mandela was a real, historical character hmm
