Anyone watching? Quite enjoying it so far!

MartavTaurus Mon 16-Mar-26 09:00:15

I'm enjoying it. The actress who plays Mary (?name?) is giving a good performance despite the degrading scenes like wearing the glasses.

Oh, is it on already? I really enjoyed the book and have been looking forward to this ! Thankyou Clawdysunshine

I loved it, in fact I binged the first 5 episodes. I’m not sure when the next five will be on iPlayer.
I loved the one liners that were as pithy as Austen’s original work.

I am a huge fan of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth, so am finding it difficult to come to terms with the new actors. However, I think the actress who plays Mary gives a good performance so I shall stick with it.

I nearly gave up as it felt like an awkward reworking of P&P but will give the second episode a go to see how it moves on.
I haven’t read the book.

I didn’t realise it had started either, which channel is it on?

Oreo Mon 16-Mar-26 09:39:13

All Austen’s books are wonderful😃

It's on BBC1 and you can binge watch it on iPlayer.

She also played Sister Frances in Call the Midwife.

Loved it.. And Lucy Briers who play "Hill" was in the Colin Firth one as Mary, clever casting.
Not going to binge, this is a lovely gentle Sunday watch.

It's not a Jane Austen book, it's from a book by Janice Shardlow based on the Pride and Prejudice characters.

I recorded it, it probably isn't DH's cup of chamomile!

I enjoyed it , but I haven’t read the book , and it’s years since I read P+P
It’s a good Sunday night programme

Thank you.
I thought she looked vaguely familiar.

I quite enjoyed it but I feel anxious not to confuse the appearance of the actors with those in our lovely classic P and P with Colin Firth-----I wish the producer had got the same actors to play the several parts.

As for the story line I---- daresay Austen was correct that marriage was a matter of selling one's personal attractions to the highest bidder, and her novel marked the very beginning of feminism in the character of Elizabeth.

I'm not a fan so far, Mrs Bennett and the girls are too arch and nasty to her, I've not warmed to them at all.
It's also driving me mad that whenever Mary's on screen all I can see is Sam from Corrie.

I had the exact same thought! I wonder ic they are related? I enjoyed it so far but I won't binge watch either.

Bennet...autocorrectangry

We watched the first two episodes last night. DH, although he has seen the film (not read the book though), kept asking what was going on, so didn't understand why I was enjoying it so much. I thought it was very clever indeed and chuckled a lot. I shall watch the rest of it on iPlayer - in fact I'm going to watch Ep3 right now!

Pittcity Mon 16-Mar-26 13:31:57

DH told me to stop spoiling it by saying who was going to marry who.....

My jury is still out. So far my strongest objection is to Mr. Collins, who comes across as an oaf to whom Lady Catherine de Burgh would never have given house room.

Aveline Mon 16-Mar-26 14:05:05

I quite enjoyed it. Mary was excellent casting. As usual there was the anachronistic insertion of various characters of obvious asian origin.

I felt the same, to me Mary being less popular was totally overplayed, it was far too dominant a plot line and rather boring. There are too many Jane Austen or Jane Austen adaptations and so many other fab books I'd rather have seen something else. It is very pretty to look at though so I'll probably keep watching.

Fartooold Mon 16-Mar-26 14:25:24

I really enjoyed it, I am not allowing my self to binge watch!

I know, was just pointing out that Austen wrote wonderful books.Any of them, it’s hard to pinpoint the best.
