Old soaps you remembered and like

OK, I've seen numerous soaps come and go over my lifetime, but always wonder which ones Gransnetters watched and enjoyed over the years that are no longer with us.
My guiltiest pleasure has to be The Young Doctors, which became a cult thing when I was at school over 40 years ago. Think of General Hospital made in Aus in the seventies with even cheaper sets and some real ham acting, corny plots and a killer theme tune. I do recall one episode where a Rod Stewart lookalike( well sort of) came into hospital for treatement and behaved like a big head. Eventually he came good and gave the nurses free tickets to his concert. Cue, a couple of flashing spotlights, fake applause and cheering and some bad singing.
More seriously, I was a big fan of Angels, the BBC soap about yoing nurses that covered subjects like alcoholism, adultery and racism( 7pm as well back in the day). I can recall one episode where a Chinese nurse was mocked for being a virgin and, of course, loads of laughter from a group of 14 year olds who were watching Angels.
So what were your guilty soap and not so guilty soap pleasures back in the day?

Does anyone remember Soap and the spin off series Benson?

The cedar tree my goodness that takes me back. Had my first child I was a young bride and mum and it was my go to programme.

I used to watch A Country Practice set in Australia. I seem to remember a wombat. My husband got hooked on The Cedar Tree when he was convalescing after the accident where he lost his leg.

Not sure if it can be classed as a soap, but I liked When the Boat Comes In.

Does anyone remember Families, with a young Jude Law in it.
Early 90's I think

I like The Cedar Tree. It was screened in the early afternoons during the 1970-80’s from what I can remember.

I loved the Cedar Tree.

I remember the actress Carole Royale being in it and I was extremely jealous of her very long hair as mine had just been cut

My best memory of Crossroads was when Amy Turtle forgot her lines (not unusual)

The emphasis of whe where when etc by Meg

Never missed Crossroads, Neighbours, El Dorado and back in the day Emmerdale Farm as it was then called.

Dynasty and Knots Landing !! 2 Favourites both on Prime T.V. in the 1980s .. Peyton Place was an oldie !! 1970s !!

Frenchgalinspain Mon 06-Apr-26 15:06:24

I am quite fond of the Turkish Soap Operas and the South American.

As a journalist and researcher, I always tune into at least one Daytime T.V. Programme a day.

I truly enjoy those that have a criminology segment and a medical aspect !!

At the moment I am watching the 3rd series of EMANET (LEGACY) PRODUCED IN ISTANBUL, TURQUIA.

I worked from home in the 1980s and used to stop at lunchtime to watch Neighbours. I became quite addicted and hated it if I missed an episode (no catch up in those days). I remember the gossipy Mrs Mangel and was upset by the episode in which her son’s wife was accidentally shot and killed. Crossroads was my secret passion and I never told my DH who would have mocked me for watching such ‘trash’!

Peyton Place, Crossroads, Howard’s Way, a Family at War, Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing. Those were the days when there was something to look forward to other than “talent”shows, games shows and violence.

I loved the parody series, "Soap".
"This is the story of two sisters, Jessica Tate and Mary Campbell..."
"Confused, you won't be after this week’s episode..."

There was also a spinoff, "Benson"

I don't remember any of these sort of programmes being described as soaps until the 1990s. But I may be wrong.

Guesswhat

Sodapop and Kate49, you’re both right. Ronald Allen played David Hunter in Crossroads and he also played a part in The
Newcomers.
I think he also had a role in the soap about a football club called United!
Yes, he was a bit of a heartthrob, but I seem to recall that in real life he was very far from being a ladies’ man.

Doh! I meant to write Compact not The Newcomers.

sodapop Mon 06-Apr-26 12:26:11

Thanks Guesswhat I was just about to say I thought Ronald Allen was in both soaps. I couldn’t remember his name though.
I also listened to Waggoners Walk regularly, I think it replaced Mrs Dale's Diary.

The Grove Family, The Appleyards, and much more recently, Doctors. Oh yes, The Cedar Tree but I was working and frequently forgot to record it.

Howard's Way was compulsory Sunday night viewing in our house. The theme tune was lovely. The lead actor Maurice Colburn died tragically young.

Wyllow3 Mon 06-Apr-26 09:33:03

Yes, that was very good.

Primrose53 Mon 06-Apr-26 09:23:16

Has anybody mentioned Howard’s Way? That was good.

I used to watch Sons & Daughters, an Australian soap, it was on in the afternoon in the 80s.

Thanks for reminding me! I loved that programme. I used to watch it in the afternoons when I put my baby son down for a nap.

Magenta8 Mon 06-Apr-26 09:21:15

The first television soaps I remember were "The Grove Family" and "The Appleyards."

On the radio there were "The Glums," "The Buggins'es," "Mrs Dale's Diary," and of course, still running "The Archers."

Cumbrianmale56 Mon 06-Apr-26 09:12:11

Brooskide was quite hard hitting, with stotylines about unemployment, racism, homosexuality and crime. I do recall in its early days it was far better to watch( well as a teen) than Coronation St, whose storylines were mundane and older skewing like Albert Tatlock winning a tenner at the pensioner's bingo.
