Old soaps you remembered and like

OK, I've seen numerous soaps come and go over my lifetime, but always wonder which ones Gransnetters watched and enjoyed over the years that are no longer with us.
My guiltiest pleasure has to be The Young Doctors, which became a cult thing when I was at school over 40 years ago. Think of General Hospital made in Aus in the seventies with even cheaper sets and some real ham acting, corny plots and a killer theme tune. I do recall one episode where a Rod Stewart lookalike( well sort of) came into hospital for treatement and behaved like a big head. Eventually he came good and gave the nurses free tickets to his concert. Cue, a couple of flashing spotlights, fake applause and cheering and some bad singing.
More seriously, I was a big fan of Angels, the BBC soap about yoing nurses that covered subjects like alcoholism, adultery and racism( 7pm as well back in the day). I can recall one episode where a Chinese nurse was mocked for being a virgin and, of course, loads of laughter from a group of 14 year olds who were watching Angels.
So what were your guilty soap and not so guilty soap pleasures back in the day?

Does anyone remember Soap and the spin off series Benson?

Has anybody mentioned Howard’s Way? That was good.

Not if you were a serious sailing enthusiasts.😱

Take the High Road, on in the afternoon, my MIL was a big fan and I started watching it when I was on maternity leave.
The original Emmerdale Farm which also used to be on in the afternoon.

Grange Hill became like a soap when it went to two episodes a week in 1979 and had strong and memorable characters. I watched it from 1978 until about 1994 as the stories were so good and the acting as good as an adult show. You rooted for the loveable rogue Tucker Jenkins when he got one over the teachers, and loved to hate the school bully, Gripper Stebson.

Grandyma Soap was hilarious.

I used to love 'Soap' and my favourite character was Burt Campbell. I hope it appears on one of the digital channels soon.
I also loved 'Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in' although of course that was a sketch show not a soap.

Take The High Road was shown in peak time on Border as part of the region covered Scotland and, while not very popular in England, was almost as popular in Scotland as Coronation St for some years. I do recall Scottish friends saying a lot of them watched High Road as it reflected rural Scottish life quite accurately.

I think these were in the 60's:

The Newcomers
Compact
Emergency Ward 10
Family at War

Crossroads.

Crossroads. I met "Sandy", looked after him as he was our guest of honour at a Rag Ball.

I like The Sullivans, an Aussie soap (or was it a period drama?)
The Cedar Tree
Emmerdale Farm

I watched Coronation Street in the very beginning and East Enders for a couple of years when George was in it but don't watch any now.

A Family At War, oh yes, thanks for the reminder * Eloethan*

Anyone remember Compact? I have a vague memory of that.

Yes, I do. I think this is the earliest soap I remember.

Kate1949 Mon 06-Apr-26 23:44:31

Was he nice Allira ?

Ronald Allen.
Interesting and varied career considering he's probably best remembered for Crossroads!

Another vote for The Cedar Tree.

There was one called Weavers Green, set in the countryside, it didn’t last long I think.

I liked Where the Heart Is, about a loo roll factory! It was probably a series rather than a soap, but it ran for a while.

sodapop Tue 07-Apr-26 09:10:10

I enjoyed Where the Heart Is too TheSunRisesInTheEast a good cast. Think it was mainly about a group of district nurses though, the loo roll factory was just a side issue.

My very earliest soap memory is of Mrs Dale’s Diary on the big old ‘wireless’. When very, very small I made an effort to get behind it, to see the little people who were talking.
Such a crushing disappointment on seeing only wires and little light bulbs!

I was going to start happily tapping away from just reading the title of this post and was going to say Camay and Lux held fond memories LOL :}.

TV soaps - I remember watching Crossroads chilling out after school while tea was being cooked. A nice bit of downtime.

He was very polite and very quiet!
Very sad what happened later.

I can remember Night and Day, starring Lesley Joseph, about a group of people who lived in Greenwich. It only lasted a year as it wasn't very popular, but had an interesting twist where one of the characters turned out to be a ghost.

@#£%&

I was just going to ask that!

We used to watch it at teatime. My mother had worked on a newspaper before the war and loved the atmosphere of the office. I remember the editor in chief was called Camilla.

JackyB Tue 07-Apr-26 16:03:34

(I've read through all the posts now after jumping in with my previous contribution.)

Many things mentioned weren't soaps to my mind. Dr Finlay and Dixon of Dock Green for example were one-off, self-contained stories each week whereas soaps like Crossroads and Mrs Dale's Diary were continual narratives with parallel storylines which carried over from one episode to the next.

Allira Tue 07-Apr-26 16:05:56

Oh yes, vaguely! 😀
Ronald Allen was in that too.
