What a wonderful lady. Watching her on HIGNFY last night so cheered me up. At the age of 94 years she has more intelligence, good humour and a care for the world than most politicians. I actually found myself clapping my hands when what she had written in her book many years ago about Donald Trump was quoted.
We need to heed her warnings that populist voting could lead to a British version of what happened in Germany in the 1930's

What exactly are Leftist views apart from caring about others? That’s literally all there is to it. Why people think it’s a bad thing baffles me.

Agree

Sorry....Who are you talking about?

It is interesting how people interpret what they see and hear so differently.

Far from patronising Sheila, I was impressed that they were so sparky with her and did not patronise her.

She has compassion and a sense of community. If that makes her a lefty then that is fine. These are qualities that it would be good to see in people of any political persuasion but sadly every man/woman for him/her self seems to be the order if the day.

She has seen the misery that populist brings ... we need to heed her warning.

I missed the programme last week but comments here made me curious. Having now watched it on iplayer I thought she was brilliant. She was not patronised, nor did she 'go on and on' any more than any of the others. It was a particularly funny episode and I laughed out loud more than once! Thans for bringing it to my attention.

The reason I found her irritating and her long winded intrusions is that she was not funny or even ironic. Why is it that 'celebs' opinions are somehow valuable. She's just an old actress. So is Joan Collins but you don't see her political opinions being celebrated

Humour’s subjective, as shown by different opinions on this thread. I found her very funny, but wouldn’t expect everyone else to share the same view. Joan Collins has hosted HIGNFY, so probably got a few of her political views over at the time?

As an aside, does everyone know about the “quote” facility on Gransnet? If you’re commenting on a particular post or asking a question of a particular poster, it’s best to use it, otherwise your comment just appears with no context and can be wasted.

Franbern, dont be so naive,

Well, in my long and often actively political life I have been called many things - but this is a first. Please explain in what way you consider my comment naive?

I am so proud that I have always been on the left wing side of politics. Proud, because as a 'leftie' is means that I care for other people, all people in all parts of the world. As a 'leftie' I totally uphold the idea of medical care being 'free at the point of use', education to be free (paid for by taxes), that good, appropriate housing be available for all and that war is an abomination.

That's lovely Franbern but are you included on TV programmes? Just not a celeb!

Galaxy Fri 15-May-26 11:25:36

People who see themselves as 'good' do terrible things all the time, they embrace terrible ideas, etc.

I like her, she made me laugh

Joanofarc99 Fri 15-May-26 12:55:59

A very irritating woman

TiggyW Sat 16-May-26 01:21:01

Sheila Hancock is actually 93, not 94.

Seabreeze Sat 16-May-26 08:49:14

What is HIGNFY.
Thank you.

Maggiemaybe Sat 16-May-26 09:07:11

It’s Have I Got News For You, Seabreeze, 9pm on BBC on Fridays.

People often say things like 'why should we listen to them on politics - they are just actors' or words to that effect.
So, are those people really wanting all our politicians only to be that, not to have any of the normal jobs that their electorate do.

Most of our MP's, and local Councillors would also (hopefully in IMO), have or had other jobs, of all sorts and descriptions.

Being an actor is as important as all those other jobs, and their opinions on political matters are as relevant and important as anyone elses.

Obviously it is they and other well-known people who are invited to go on tv panels like HIGNFY.

Aveline Sat 16-May-26 09:56:46

I think TV panel show bookers are more cynical than that. There's usually an officially diverse selection of people. This woman was probably picked to tick off some criterion. I'll leave it to others to identify it.

Galaxy Sat 16-May-26 10:00:30

I would actually say that generally their opinions are less relevant to the general population than say the opinions of a plumber, etc.

Agree - ‘just wars’ are rare and most wars avoidable with strong intervention before thousands of lives are lost.

Aveline Mon 18-May-26 11:47:17

Tell me more about these taxes to pay for everything and everybody. I'm proud to be able to think things through fully.

Oreo Mon 18-May-26 17:00:16

I think you’ll find that most people regardless of their politics want the NHS to continue, schools to continue being free and housing to be built and think that wars are awful.

Very true!
