I loved this book at school and I hear the film has got excellent reviews, however it is 3 hours long !

Also there was a comment that one of the actors was hard to hear. I have a hearing problem and can’t cope with mumblers.

No doubt I will still go. Anyone here seen the film yet ?

I saw this film today and Wow! Wonderful to see a movie with the director, Christopher Nolan and his staff at the top of their game. Some wonderful performances from the actors and actresses. The Odyssey will be nominated in many categories for this masterpiece.

I've seen it and enjoyed it. I've no idea how accurate it is to Homer's and tbh I don't care. It's an entertaining film which kept me engaged for 3 hours when some films don't for half that time. I found it easy to follow and the special effects are brilliant.

Saw this last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Only knew the basic story but could follow most of it. Very spectacular. My OH who can't stand how loud the cinemas are these days actually wore ear plugs and said that worked really well. I'm deaf and couldn't go the day the subtitled edition was playing. However I was able to still enjoy it. I did jump with fright a couple of times which added to my enjoyment grin I also enjoyed my prosecco wine whilst sitting in comfortable seats in an air conditioned cinema. Oh! incidentally knowing it was so long and wouldn't be over until nearly 11pm, I had a siesta in the afternoon blush

I am glad some other people liked it, I went in with reservations but I loved it.

The film was spectacular, far too long, but having subtitles helped tremendously. I would give it 8 out of 10.

Off to see it today. It has subtitles, free coffee and cake as it is just for oldies 👍

DD2 went to see it at an IMax and said it was a wonderful film.
Like all films some will enjoy and others won’t.

I don't mind American accents in classical or Biblical epics. British English sounds better to us but is no more logical than American in those contexts. (The English language didn't even exist then!)

I agree, it really only sounds a little ‘off’ as we are British.

Maybe Mel Gibson's desire to dredge up ancient Aramaic for his film about Christ would be more authentic

I wasn’t aware that Mel Gibson had even a nodding acquaintance with authenticity.
(Still haven’t got over chortling at the rubbish that was his disastrous Braveheart.)

I enjoyed the sound track more than the movie.

I expect many people enjoyed the intermission more than the film, especially anyone with a smidgeon of knowledge of history hmm

I don’t mind three hour long films, if only they would allow a comfort break 😩 what happened to intervals?

foxie48 Tue 28-Jul-26 20:17:12

I went to see it this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. the special effects are excellent (I didn't see it at an Imax cinema) sound was mostly OK and the story rolled along at a fast pace. Well worth 3 hours of my time, recommend it although I'm another who dislikes the American accent but that's because I'm British!

Oops - second time lucky?

Just back home from watching this film (not on Imax).
I did find the dialogue quite difficult to follow (would have loved sub-titles). Do think you have to have a reasonable knowledge of this story to really be able follow it.
Was crowded to get it all in three hours (no break), might have been better to have followed the Lord of the Rings format and had two or even three films.
I was quite taken aback recently when I mentioned to someone reasonably well education and intelligent whose reply to me when I said I was going to see this was 'What is Odyssey? - never heard of that'.
I did enjoy this film - glad that I saw it, excellent special effects and well acted.

I don't altogether disagree, I think it's the fact that we associate the US and more latterly Australia, I'm thinking Russell Crowe, Gladiator, with the new world. There is of course no reason to think a Roman from those times would have spoken with a theatrical English accent either. Maybe Mel Gibson's desire to dredge up ancient Aramaic for his film about Christ would be more authentic. I can't say, I didn't see it.

I think I worked out years ago that American accents didn't seem quite right in anything biblical, or ancient civilization related. That was brought home to me as a child when watching The Greatest Story Ever Told and John Wayne had a nano second appearance, still too long, when he stood at the foot of the cross and drawled Texan style "he truly was the son of God" oh get back on your horse somehow it didn't sound quite right shock

But they wouldn't have spoken English let alone with an English accent. I remember all the criticism of John Wayne and some expert said a Roman soldier was likely from the provinces and a Texas drawl was probably more appropriate than a theatrical English accent.

I watched it last night, mainly because my husband wanted to see it, i actually enjoyed it more than him. Its good but not as good as the reviews ( my opinion) a lot of plot holes, the acting is good & we went to the Vue in Paington, it was extremely loud in some scenes.

I went there once. Can't remember what the film was but I complained about the volume, it was actually painful. The member of staff was rude. Never again.

Franbern Sun 26-Jul-26 15:16:51

Just getting ready to go to watch this. Will let you all know what I think of it when I return.

3hrs not enough
It is divided into 24 books and follows Odysseus,

Yes, over about 20 years in fact!

I think it's called précis.

I wouldn’t call it a précis, but the film is an adaptation of the poem recounting the ten years it took Odysseus to get home to his wife and son in Ithaca.

Moonwatcher1904 Sun 26-Jul-26 00:50:10

I watched the series Troy on Netflix so me and my daughter went to see The Odyssey at our local IMAX. It was brilliant both sound and vision. Many scenes made you feel like you were moving with the film. Strange sensation. I told me DH that I would be happy to see it again and he can see for himself.

MT62 Sun 26-Jul-26 00:29:50

Yes what happened to a ‘comfort break’? With these long films, thin ‘ Gone with the Wind’ Adverts would come on & you could nip off for a choc ice 😩we all aren’t like camels

Shinamae Sat 25-Jul-26 22:13:01

I’m in North Devon never even heard of an IMAX we’re just lucky to have a cinema at all…🥹
I’m going to see it Monday afternoon really looking forward to it…
