I have been studying The Odyssey , the Mendelssohn translation, not the Emily Wilson, on a 10 week course and am fully prepared to be disappointed!

I am going tonight, field to odeon cock up have paid twice for it, so it better be good!

I've read 5 star reviews, one in the Guardian and I think in the ST. I'm contemplating seeing the film next week when we're back home. I saw a trailer a while back with all the best bits!

I have a grandson who is studying at the Brits in London. He has been obsessed with cinema and theatre from the age of 7. He saw Odyssey last night and described it as incredible. He said the last hour is some of the best cinema he has ever seen and he's seen a lot! To those who feel 3 hours is too long; a great film won't seem like it. 5* reviews everywhere so far.

I’m in 2 minds about whether to see it. Some years ago I did an OU course (very interesting BTW) on Homer, so read in a lot of detail both the Odyssey and the Iliad.

I’m always a bit wary of any new productions of period pieces, in case the dialogue sounds too modern* or there’s gratuitous ‘sexing up’.
*as shown by a good many BBC period productions, it’s perfectly possible to make dialogue 100% comprehensible to modern audiences, without it sounding too contemporary.

I loved it !

I watched it last night, mainly because my husband wanted to see it, i actually enjoyed it more than him. Its good but not as good as the reviews ( my opinion) a lot of plot holes, the acting is good & we went to the Vue in Paington, it was extremely loud in some scenes.

I agree , ok but not up to hype, too long and extremely loud in parts

Booked to see it next week.

I considered going next week with a friend then found out it’s 3 bluddy hours long!
No thanks.

This was debated on the Piers Morgan show last night some interesting points of view.

I saw that and it was quite long and detailed. Piers Morgan does have some very interesting discussions on his show. These were professors and experts on ancient history (don't ask me their names) and I found it interesting although knew very little about it.

It amused me that the actress Lupita Nyong'o complained with great confidence that women didn't feature enough in the original even though she hadn't read it. She seemed to think Homer had done women an injustice, but the experts explained that the whole story revolved around women. So even though she'd acted in the movie she didn't understand it! 😂

The 3 hours flew by! Made sure I visited the loo just before we went in. The actor bashing his club on the floor at the very beginning of the film was very hard to hear and I started to panic thinking I was going to miss most of what was said but everyone else was loud and clear. I love Greek mythology ( do read the Madeline Miller books if you like it too) and it pretty much stuck to the story. Loved Cyclops and Circe’s swine but disappointed that we didn’t get to see the Sirens. A real swashbuckler of a film!

I go to the cinema only very rarely, I find the sound is always far too loud and always end up with a headache. The difference between the speech and music is also unreasonable too. At least if I wait until the films I want to see come onto the tv I can control the sound as I want to.

We go the old biddies showing. Free coffee and biscuits thrown in and cheaper tickets.

I'll wait for the old biddies showing. I do agree with Missdeke.,..the surround sound is like a physical assault. I've noticed when I take the grandchildren to a movie lots of the kids get upset at the noise level.

I taught the Iliad and the Odyssey for years to senior students. In two minds about seeing the film, as film adaptations of lifetime favourites almost invariably disappoint. Is it true that Penelope does not appear AT ALL? How can that be??
