Classic Neighbours

Anyone else, caught in nostalgia = watching this? Back in 1985 I came across it by accident. Did not normally have time to have tv on during the day - but switched my one (only one we had), whilst giving Living room a good clean out. Probably about two or three weeks after it started and was fascinated to see Shane highboard diving. Two of my children had just joined a diving club and I was excited for them to see this when i discovered each episode had a late afternoon repeat.

So, it became standard when they had their after-school snack to watch neighbours. Of course, the diving disappeared within a couple of episodes, but it became a firm favourite.

As time past and kids went on to Uni, I stopped watching this, returned many years later and stayed until it finished.

As I watch these early episodes (I am now just about up to 'where I came in'), it brings back vividly, that large living room and the chintz three piece suite, etc.

Became a diving judge, Shane's dives would not have even got him into the national squad, let alone won him any medal at the Olympics!!!!!

Glad you're enjoying it. You certainly deserve a medal for being such a faithful viewer over so many years. I never saw it at the beginning but have dipped in for a quick look since it started a couple of weeks ago. Those early episodes look so dated now, don't they, the picture quality, the sets, all very grainy. But the warmth was still there. It has such a homely feel, which is why people liked it. I never watched any of the British soaps because they didn't have that.

I missed out huge chunks of Neighbours over the years, saw Kylie and Jason though, and followed it regularly from about 2010 onwards. My favourite character was always Paul Robinson, such a villain, but then he would get upset and look so sad with those puppy dog eyes and you just melted for him.

My favourite memory was after Tod, (some sort of relation?) who was living with the Robinsons, had been killed. About a week later a friend said "I'm going to see the Robinsons. I don't think they're over Tod yet" Gosh! A whole week and they weren't over a death yet!

Deedaa things happen very quickly in soaps, especially health issues. So many times you see someone in hospital with life changing injuries, completely immobile, in a coma or maybe have a brain injury. Then a couple of weeks later they're doing well and going home. It' a miracle! That's why we love them.

This is especially true in Home and Away where one woman had heart surgery but was very soon wearing low cut dresses with no visible scar.πŸ˜‚

I began watching by chance while nursing my new baby. I don't normally follow soaps but it must have been the Aussie sunshine and the pure escapism which appealed during her first winter.
I haven't seen the repeats yet but I might πŸ™‚

DD is all grown up now with 2 DC of her own. I wonder if she knows her DM watched Neighbours...

So Channel 4 has the very first series from 1985, I don't know for how long that will keep going. But Amazon has 2012 onwards, which is a lot of episodes.

There's more classic Neighbours streaming on U and also a You Tube Neighbours channel which starts from 1985 I believe, so it's still around in various places.

I watched Neighbours in those early days and loved it.
I wanted to work at Lassiters and walk across the little bridge to the cafè.
Seemed so different to offices I'd worked in here in England.

Plus I had my daughter during this time so it brings back very Happy memories.

I loved the early Neighbours with Shane, Daphne, Max and the Bungle Bungles getting a mention every few episodes!
I also loved A Country Practice and secretly fancied Dr Bowen (Grant Dodwell)

My daughter and her friend were eleven when it started. They were obsessed and never missed an episode. I soon got into it too. Words like Uni were first heard of on that soap. I remember Daphne and her trendy haircut.

Wr used to play the ceefax (?) quiz on tv, then watch neighbours when my girl got home from school.
Everyone used to say I was a dead ringer for Daphne (alas, not Kylie!)

I did too, from start to finish. All those years.
Such a shame it ended sad

Bukkie Sat 01-Aug-26 22:08:35

Welshy It is so sad it finished bearing in mind lots of the other rubbish that remains on television.

Welshy Sat 01-Aug-26 22:33:10

Bukkie .... You can say that again!
Why would they keep the likes of Home & Away over Neighbours for one!

Well I still watch Home and Away to see all the beautiful locations and happy people surfing and laughing. Okay, the character's are mostly millennials and there's a lot of bed hopping but it's full of bubbles just like a good soap should be. I can't bear the gloom and doom of the English soaps which just bring me down. So depressing. I like a bit of Aussie sunshine in my life. 🌞 😎

And actually Home and Away has very good ratings in Australia.

In all honesty, I've never watched it. I never fancied it. But I did read that Home and Away had more ratings in Australia and Neighbours had higher ratings here..
I don't watch any British soaps either. It was only ever Neighbours for me.
So I'm just a disgruntled Neighbours fan 😁

Chestnut Sun 02-Aug-26 09:35:44

You don't have to be disgruntled. Neighbours is still all over the place as I just said a few posts back. You can go back to the beginning in 1985 or start from 2012 on Amazon. I've reached 2015 whilst eating lunch. 😁

I watched the new Neighbours when it came back but something had changed and I really didn't like the new characters. I never got into it and stopped watching, so I wasn't bothered when it ended again.

The theme tune is one of the best, simple and to the point. Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours, with a little understanding you can have a perfect day. Always beat that dirge Coronation St used as a theme tune and still does.

MissAdventure Wed 05-Aug-26 22:22:48

Tony Harch wrote the theme music, if I remember rightly.
Probably not...

Chestnut Thu 06-Aug-26 00:29:49

I agree Neighbours, Home and Away and Eastenders all have good tunes, Coronation Street is dire, so depressing, But then doesn't it match those northern cobbles? I seem to remember it being just perfect in the early days, the grey streets, the cat, I guess that's what it was written for.

The Coronation St theme was written in 1960 and probably suited the black and white era, but there was never any attempt to make it jollier. It is a real dirge to hear as it sounds like a brass band playing at a funeral.
