Evolution - BBC2, Chris Packham

Might start watching it today. I did half watch some of it but didn’t understand it; my fault for not concentrating. Then on Must Watch they explained that it was all about how everything began with just the one organism and traces it back to them. There’s a very good Folk on Foot podcast featuring Chris Packham. I’ve always liked him ever since I went to a talk he gave many years ago. He says he learned how to differentiate different trees by the sound they make when rain falls on them. What amazes me about him as he sees the world in a different way to most people because of his autism but is such a good communicator.

Bit upsetting watching the first episode about elephants with the recent news of many Amboseli elephants dying from cyanide poisoning .

I replied to a comment on another thread that was discussing it but can’t remember which thread it was. I’m flitting a bit at the moment! Really upset about the elephants though…I wonder if they were Echo’s descendants. Someone on here said they’d been to Amboseli; I was so envious…

We really do have someone picking up the baton from David Attenborough.

How fascinating that everything on earth has come from that one LUCA Last Universal Common Ancestor 4.2 billion years ago and that the cute little Tree Hyrax is one of the closest living relatives to the Elephant.

Absolutely marvellous series, we found it fascinating and informative. Calm precise presentation of such an important subject. He also explains how the scientists found the evidence of evolution.
My favourite part was him explaining how the anus evolved before the head. That explains a lot!

If Chris was the first thing that the Ostrich chick saw wouldn’t imprinting mean that it would think he was its mother ? ( I saw a programme once in which a man reared some wild turkeys and they thought he was their mother; it didn’t end well, though as one of the boys started attacking him when it got older).

There’s a free Evolution wall chart related to the series that you can send for, from the OU.
I got one for the Gdcs, I hope they’ll find it interesting.

I was surprised how much I didn't know. I like Chris and the stuff he is explaining is fascinating.

I’ve always liked him but he was a bit rough round the edges when he was younger. His presenting has really evolved.

DD mentioned yesterday that I would like this - and then she mentioned Chris Packham. He gets on my nerves but I will steel myself to watch this.

I really like Chris Packham, always have, he really cares passionately about the natural world and sometimes rubs people up the wrong way when trying to champion our frequently mistreated wildlife. He is also autistic so admits he doesn’t always have a filter. IMHO he is the best possible successor to Attenborough and am loving this new provramme.

I skipped forward to the last episode about horses yesterday. Again it saddened me that the horse actually originated from North America and yet they are rounding up the mustangs herds and sending them to kill pens. Although some are rehomed many are slaughtered but thankfully there are rescues that try to find family groups and rehome them together so they can spend the rest of their lives running free in the sanctuaries. At least they’re given some sort of a chance unlike the brumbies in Australia that are just being slaughtered en masse.

Can't watch it as it's on BBC. I stopped paying my licence a couple of months ago. Sick of their bias. Biased Broadcasting Corporation. Had countless threatening texts and emails and now had one saying they have arranged a visit. Someone on Nextdoor said they've had threats for 4 years, but no-one has turned up. I don't watch any BBC programmes or any live programmes on any channel. When I cancelled it I did not realise you can't even watch anything live on ANY channel! Outrageous! Damn it. But the money saved pays for Netflix and 25% of Amazon Prime. If I change my Netflix to one with ads plus Amazon prime there will be £16 over! Don't regret cancelling it.

While I find CP irritating, I tuned in to the episode on bats; well it was advertised a bats, but only about 6 minutes out of the hour was about them. I haven't bothered since

I have thought about getting Netflix but, to be honest I can’t usually find anything that I particularly want to watch. Whereas, with BBC I’ve got things like Dianna Morgan’s comedies, University Challenge, A House Through Time ( new series starting next week!), BBC Sounds, Evolution, all the David Attenborough stuff, The Proms, Scotland Home of the Year etc etc…

He doesn’t need allowances made for being neurodivergent, he gets paid extremely well by the BBC for this new series and the seasons watch programmes.

It was his choice to be in the public eye

He actually could and should be an inspiration to others on the neurodivergent spectrum that they can succeed if they put their minds to it.

And radio as well....couldnt live without radio 4. Peaseblossomwhat do you listen to?
