On BB2 right now - absolutely lovely, the true story of Raymond Briggs's parents, Ethel and Ernest, two ordinary Londoners living through a period of extraordinary events and immense social change.

Fabulous I am a big softie
and cry each time I have watched this.

MawtheMerrier Wed 10-Aug-22 20:55:33

I’m crying right now

karmalady Wed 10-Aug-22 20:59:06

Truly nostalgic. Gets to me every time

Witzend Wed 10-Aug-22 20:59:45

It’s brilliant. I tried for ages to get dh to read the book, but once he had, he was hooked, and we’ve got the DVD too. I think he particularly liked it because Ethel and Ernest’s house was in Wimbledon Park, where his folks also lived until the late 80s. He worked out which road and went back for a look. I dare say there’ll be a blue plaque on the house now - if not, I’ll want to know why!

I'm going to put it on and have a good cry as well. sad
Why do I do this to myself?

MissAdventure Wed 10-Aug-22 21:03:06

Hang on!
Why am I watching Edinburgh?
Where has it gone?

MawtheMerrier Wed 10-Aug-22 21:31:58

It ended at 9.
But should be available on iPlayer

Aldom Wed 10-Aug-22 21:33:55

Just beautiful.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Aug-22 21:36:56

Oh thanks, Maw.
I had the time all wrong in my mind.

MawtheMerrier Wed 10-Aug-22 21:40:12

Hope you can get it OK

MissAdventure Wed 10-Aug-22 21:41:38

With my tech wizardry, no problem. grin

grannydarkhair Wed 10-Aug-22 21:41:54

It’s a truly lovely wee film. I’m hoping they also show When the Wind Blows sometime soon.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Aug-22 21:45:23

I've never seen that.

Casdon Wed 10-Aug-22 22:20:46

I saw Where the Wind Blows in a theatre production in Manchester in the early eighties. It was one of the most profoundly moving plays I’ve ever seen - beautifully observed, but so sad, I’ve never forgotten it.

Casdon Wed 10-Aug-22 22:21:34

Sorry When not Where!

MissAdventure Wed 10-Aug-22 22:28:16

I have heard it is very, very sad.
Something to look forward to. smile

grannydarkhair Wed 10-Aug-22 22:44:52

Casdon I saw the live version at our local Rep, probably around the same time. It was the first and only time that I’ve seen virtually everyone in a full theatre in tears by the end.

What a coincidence! I was listening to some old episodes of "A Good Read" and this book came up. I can't watch the film as I can't access iPlayer from where I live, but I might order the book.
