Feeling a bit wobbly about tomorrow!

Good morning all, can't stop feeling rather apprehensive about going in for my first trial day tomorrow, the job spec is incredibly broad, and totally unlike what I have done in the past.

I know the idea is to give it a go for three days and see if I like it, (and of course if they like me) but I'm a tad worried that is going to be more housekeeping than office! (At the second interview they asked me how I felt about ironing shock )

There is also the thing about the other interview next week. I think that I will see how tomorrow goes, and then be honest and tell them that I have been invited to interview for another position and will be attending, and therefore would like to keep my options open.

Any thoughts?

It will soon be time to get prepared for another day at the ranch. I am keeping my fingers crossed for Wednesday. Have you told your new employers yet?

Excel spreadsheet. One column chronological. In another column give them a number. You can sort on chronology or your own number system.

Elegran Sat 08-Feb-14 11:24:28

About the filing system - If he is adamant on the chronological order, my first move would be to make a paper list of them in alphabetical order, with their date of construction (where they wi8ll be filed) beside them. Keep that on the desk.

Sounds very hairy.

You could have made an interesting cocktail, phoenix. Or save it up for when you need to strip some paint. grin

Anne58 Fri 07-Feb-14 22:27:08

Galen I challenge you to make sense of it in the current, real world!
The date order for bookings, yes, obviously makes sense, but then the subdivision into villa order (as in when built, not alphabetical WHAT ?

when thank you, so very glad that it is not only me!

Galen Fri 07-Feb-14 22:08:31

Makes sense to me! I would have loved to have studied archaeologiy and in that chronology is VIP!

whenim64 Fri 07-Feb-14 21:20:44

Well, I've heard of some filing systems but that takes the biscuit, phoenix. What an 'interesting' job this is turning out to be hmm

merlotgran Fri 07-Feb-14 21:05:25

Ha Ha, Phoenix. His home-made wine sounds just like ours. wine grin

Anne58 Fri 07-Feb-14 20:57:57

Alert! Had a brief meeting with the owner re my thoughts so far etc, and also to collect money for the 3 days worked this week.

He offered me a bottle of the infamous wine, and I said NO ! (made up some excuse about alcohol free day, and if I had a bottle I would be too tempted hmm truth is the wine has been prepared for maximum alcohol content and bugger all other qualities, including taste!)

Now, speaking as someone who looks forward to a drink once the sun is over the yardarm, this may give you an indication of how I feel about his wine!

Galen Fri 07-Feb-14 18:53:41

What? Drink the wine confused?

Lona Fri 07-Feb-14 18:22:36

Cheers phoenix someone has to do it! grin

Anne58 Fri 07-Feb-14 18:01:30

I am currently enjoying a glass of Sauvignon Blanc grin

Absolutely positive that this job is NOT for me, but will keep going for now!

Cheers all!

kittylester Fri 07-Feb-14 16:08:21

Nonu Fri 07-Feb-14 07:41:54

wink

grannyactivist Fri 07-Feb-14 00:11:38

Onwards and upwards phoenix - just change the thing and when he complains just smile and remind him that he's employing you for your skills and filing is one of them.
Seriously, it's early days yet and it'll take a while to iron out the wrinkles. grin (Did you see what I did there?)

Anne58 Fri 07-Feb-14 00:00:53

Day 2 in the phoenix new job house (think the Geordie accent of the Big Brother House thing) still alive!

Trying to overcome the glaringly obvious things (38 "villas", filing alphabetically ? No, of course not! Filed in a list that runs as to when they were built confused Have asked "Why?" Told "well,
we have always done it like this" Suggested that it might be changed, response? "Well, you can try, but the owner will not have it!) Aaaaargh!

Big shouty capitals alert! *JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT LIKE THAT, DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD, OR THAT IT IS THE BEST WAY!

And breathe...............

kittylester Thu 06-Feb-14 18:49:37

Hi phoenix I've only just caught up with this as we've been in Suffolk with a howling which kept blowing the connection away!

Hope you are enjoying the work experience. In my experience mad as a box of frogs in ok. We used to count Mum in numbers of boxes eg 12 = really, really bad!!!! smile

Ana Thu 06-Feb-14 18:36:51

How did the second day go, phoenix?

Agus Thu 06-Feb-14 18:31:30

What's all the fuss about cleaning toilets? It's not as if any of us have never done it before!

Believe me Phoenix as an ex nurse, I have had to clean a lot worse than a toilet grin

Chin up, it's a means to an end.

suzied Thu 06-Feb-14 17:56:57

Just tell yourself that cleaning is therapeutic and remember to take your rubber gloves!

rosesarered Thu 06-Feb-14 11:58:30

Good luck with your other interview Phoenix because unsure that working for anyone as mad as a box of frogs could work well. You need to know where you are with people and have boundaries. A friend of mine worked for a very eccentric person once who was either giving her presents or asking her to do other people's work and was infuriating. It's a job for now, but keep looking for other things. smile

janerowena Thu 06-Feb-14 11:43:49

The title should stand you in good stead for any future job applications, though. After all it could have been an employer who chose to call you 'cleaner'.

Yes, where you live isn't helpful. My sister bought a house nearby, in deepest rural Suffolk, because as she travelled around the UK seeing clients in the southeast it didn't really matter where she lived, she was fed up with London and her head office was in Herts. She had only been up here for six months and her department was closed. She tried to get all manner of jobs, even a cleaner in a local home for mental health patients for which she would have first had to take a course in self-defense, but now finds herself in the position of only being home at weekends and having to sleep on various friends' and family's sofas while she is back working in London.

I did warn her that the only avaiable jobs up here, apart from chicken-catching, were either picking cabbages or looking after them, but she didn't believe me. She has a beautiful house, but of course can't sell it.

So, fingers crossed for next week, but maybe you will enjoy working for the eccentric, who knows?
