We're looking for community-minded, computer-savvy gransnetters to take charge of Gransnet Local sites across the country.

If you'd like to know more about the role, have a look at our Local Editors page. We're looking for editors for the following sites in particular at the moment (but are open to editors for other areas as well!):

Nottingham
Cambridge/Cambridgeshire
Surrey
Leicestershire
Manchester
Birmingham
Liverpool
Durham

If you're in touch with what's going on in your local area, fancy organising local meet ups and are a networker at heart, get in touch at [email protected]!

Yes, we know you are!

And there are one or two areas where it seems to be working / is working very well. (Thinking Edinburgh) But there are some areas where the local person appears nowhere, or only very occasionally, on the forums, and seems to have no idea what is going on. I recall someone (only seen from time to time) trying to jolly us all along for a meet up on the day when we were mourning the death of Greatnan. Obviously hadn't been near the forums and gauged feelings and emotions.

My point is that a local editor needs to be in overall touch with the whole of GN, and that only one or two very committed people are.

Quite a lot of us manage to get together, informally, via the forums, and have all had some great get togethers. I appreciate that GN needs to generate income, but perhaps the fellowship aspect and the financial / corporate aspect are, at the moment, incompatible? in business terms, this need not be the case, of course, but I do think you need to examine your HR research.

And NO, I am not interested in the jobs. I like my GN the way it is. If you really want to generate revenue, look to your Marketing / PR people.

Thank you for GN, anyway.

I agree Ariadne andliving in the desert that is the East Midlands

kittylester Thu 20-Mar-14 18:11:11

Grrrrr! Blasted phone!!

..there are very few of members around here never mind it being worthwhile someone trying to whip up any enthusiasm for anything.

I love Gn, and echo your thanks, and can't understand why this area seems to be so under populated as far as members go! Any ideas GNHQ? confused

Nelliemoser Thu 20-Mar-14 18:13:07

I think one problem might be that many of us enjoy being retired too much to want to take on anything like "work".

Ariadne Thu 20-Mar-14 20:36:14

Oh yes, Nellie there's that too.

Hi all, just thought I'd clear up a few things here. Obviously we haven't been entirely clear about what Local is all about - so apologies about that! It's useful for us to know.

Local is not a revenue stream for us. They were actually initially set about as a response to gransnetters asking for 'local' forums where they could chat to other people closer to them and organise more convenient meet-ups. We received funding to set up Gransnet Local from the Nominet Trust, a social tech funder.

Including local listings and things to do seemed like a natural extension in terms of making them more useful to you. We also hope they will help in reaching more people who don't yet know about Gransnet so that more people will find the support and friendship that so many of you have already found over the past few years (3rd birthday coming soon... cupcake!) And this is also how Gransnet benefits (not entirely altruistic wink) - by increasing our audience.

The idea is that the sites are populated by other gransnetters in the local area, so the sites that are working best are those where gransnetters are taking the sites into their own hands.

The local editors are great in that they organise meet-ups, get the sites off to a start in terms of listings, and promote the sites to local businesses who are then encouraged to make special offers to local gransnetters. They work very hard in promoting the sites too and aside from a small monthly payment (again funded by Nominet) they also have the opportunity to keep 100% of any local advertising on their sites - not Gransnet.

No one needs to work in isolation on this by they way - you are most welcome to take on a joint editor role with a friend or friends.

The sites are constantly evolving and improving - there are some updates due out in the next few weeks in fact - but at the end of the day for them to be successful, gransnetters need to make the most of them too. Post on the local forums, put up a listing (we've put together a handy FAQs page here if you're struggling), or review something that is already there. One of the most surprising things to come out of the survey is that people weren't aware that anyone can add a listing - it's not just for businesses (or editors) - and that's something we're working on making clearer.

One of the other things that came out of the survey is that some people were not aware Local existed - so apologies if we're overdoing the promotion - we thought perhaps we were missing a trick there!

Please do sign up to receive your Local newsletter and email us at [email protected] if you have any thoughts on what you'd like to see more/less of.

And check out some of our busier sites: Colchester, West Sussex, Somerset, North Staffordshire among others to see the potential. All these sites are full of things to do and see in the local area as well as discussions on the forums, and meet-ups.

Gransnet took a while to get going - as does any new site - and in this case obviously we're working with much smaller areas. But we still think the gransnetters who suggested Local were 100% right to do so.

Ariadne Fri 21-Mar-14 11:23:50

Thank you for the information, Lara.

kittylester Fri 21-Mar-14 17:50:03

Thanks Lara. I still wonder why there are so few people on GN from round hereconfused

Tegan Fri 21-Mar-14 18:09:26

We must live in an area that's so exciting everyone is far too busy doing err 'exciting' things....

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 21-Mar-14 19:55:04

Whereabouts in East Midlands are you, kittylester? The Lincolnshire site has a local editor I think in case that's any good to you. Can check on Monday.
Tegan, do you think they're probably all sitting at home thinking the same thing? Clearly my area is buzzing too - which is why I'm on GN on my night off... grin

Tegan Fri 21-Mar-14 20:23:15

The Lincolnshire site has a few threads but even so most of them only seem to have one or two replies sad. I don't really understand what the aim of the local sites is to be honest confused.

kittylester Fri 21-Mar-14 21:09:48

I'm in Leicestershire but near the borders with notts and Derbyshire. Tegan lives about 10 miles away from me but in Derbyshire! When we organised a meet up, we got six - obviously six lovely people but where are the other people - are they doing really interesting things we know nothing about?

NannaAnna Sat 22-Mar-14 23:22:29

If you got 6 who actually turned up for a meet-up kittylester and Tegan you did a lot better than most of us editors who've tried to organise meet-ups!! hmm

Ariadne Sun 23-Mar-14 16:40:18

I think we were 8 at the one I organised in Exeter.

NannaAnna Sun 23-Mar-14 20:44:07

And it looks like you got that one organised without either the Exeter or Devon Local sites being operational Ariadne. Interesting.
(Although it looks like Exeter has an editor now)

rosesarered Tue 01-Apr-14 16:41:51

There's nothing happening on the Oxfordshire site. I keep posting things on the forums there but no replies!Where is everyone?

Greenfinch Tue 01-Apr-14 17:21:17

I don't often look at the local sites . I am a bit confused as there seems to be an Oxford and an Oxfordshire site which I have just discovered. I live on the Berkshire/Hampshire/Surrey border but I'm not too far from Oxford. Wallingford would be a great meet-up place for me.

Ariadne Tue 01-Apr-14 17:32:27

* Greenfinch * why not just organise one? That is what I di for Exeter and Bideford, and It was such a pleasure to do! If you use the forums, you will see how these things happen. Have a go!

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 01-Apr-14 19:01:11

Rosesarered and Greenfinch, Oxford has an editor so sure she'd be happy to organise a meet-up if a few of you are interested.
