Anyone else on here done this kind of work?

Lucca Tue 06-Jul-21 21:55:12

Which ?

kittylester Tue 06-Jul-21 21:56:59

Any or all Lucca.

I don't understand what the word veteran refers to in this thread title. What is a veteran worker or, for that matter, a veteran kitchen?

Baggs Tue 06-Jul-21 22:24:15

Oh wait... is it about a Veteran (retired soldier) doing kitchen and shop work, or NHS cleaning?

MerylStreep Tue 06-Jul-21 22:29:01

Veterans Kitchen.

Veteran just means "has a history of". I first heard it used this way when someone described themselves as a veteran competitive swimmer. It seems to have more dignity than words like firmer, old, ex-, etc.

I've worked in lots of kitchens.
Washing up, prepping food, and even cooking it at one point.
I've also done cleaning, and worked as a hospital hca.
(Jack of all trades, as they say) smile

MissAdventure that's good to hear. I know so many "professional" workers, I like to know there are others like me around. Call centres anyone?

i don't understand what this question is about.
it seems to be written in code.

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 02:25:42

Not written in code. What is it that confused you? I was just asking who else had worked in shops and kitchens, or as a cleaner?

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 02:26:42

MerylStreep good article, but not what I meant.

Baggs Wed 07-Jul-21 05:54:25

Thanks, merylstreep!

MerylStreep good article, but not what I meant.

Oh. What did you mean, then? Is the word veteran being used to refer to someone who used to do something but doesn’t any more?

Good to know if that’s becoming a common usage (or even if it’s uncommon usage).

Baggs Wed 07-Jul-21 06:27:52

Oops, sorry. Just read the thread properly blush

Baggs Wed 07-Jul-21 06:31:23

I’ve taken on a part-time retirement cleaning job in an NHS building. I didn’t apply for it; I was offered it after volunteering in the same place.

I trained as a maths teacher.

I worked in the village shop as a school girl and loved it .

You mentioned call centres too . I worked in a bank ‘ contact centre’ and hated every second of being shackled to the phone ,
having to finish calls within 215 seconds , selling ‘products’ to customers, and dealing with rude people who were not able to manage their own finances .

I stacked shelves overnight in Asda at 45 and cleaned gites when we lived in France, 2015-18.

Redhead56 Wed 07-Jul-21 10:22:47

When I was young in the mid seventies I worked in a furriers shop which was very luxurious at the time. While getting divorced I cleaned in a school and worked in a kitchen to make ends meet no shame in it.

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 12:09:57

Baggs, ergo, if you decided to teach maths again, you would be a veteran maths teacher.

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 12:12:26

Redhead56 indeed no shame at all. I never understand why people who work like this all their lives (including moi) are often regarded with disdain. As you know, the work can be done well, and requires focus and determination.

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 12:14:08

Jaxjacky night work must have been interesting, I wanted to try that (as well as picking at Amazon). Hard to stay up all night?

JillEH Wed 07-Jul-21 12:17:13

NotAGran55 haha, yes people can be so ghastly sometimes. AHT, horror, timed by the second. As was being paid by the minute. It was a kind of meat-grinder. I learned useful skills though and I was fascinated by the industry. Not a long-term career for me, though.

? Gotcha now. Thank you.

Jill, you said on another thread that you have a degree in Middle Eastern Studies, were you not able to make use of that learning as a career? Or did you do so and find it wasn’t for you?
