Veteran kitchen and shop worker, NHS cleaner

Jill, you said on another thread that you have a degree in Middle Eastern Studies, were you not able to make use of that learning as a career? Or did you do so and find it wasn’t for you?

NotAGran55 haha, yes people can be so ghastly sometimes. AHT, horror, timed by the second. As was being paid by the minute. It was a kind of meat-grinder. I learned useful skills though and I was fascinated by the industry. Not a long-term career for me, though.

Jaxjacky night work must have been interesting, I wanted to try that (as well as picking at Amazon). Hard to stay up all night?

Redhead56 indeed no shame at all. I never understand why people who work like this all their lives (including moi) are often regarded with disdain. As you know, the work can be done well, and requires focus and determination.

When I was young in the mid seventies I worked in a furriers shop which was very luxurious at the time. While getting divorced I cleaned in a school and worked in a kitchen to make ends meet no shame in it.

I stacked shelves overnight in Asda at 45 and cleaned gites when we lived in France, 2015-18.

I worked in the village shop as a school girl and loved it .

You mentioned call centres too . I worked in a bank ‘ contact centre’ and hated every second of being shackled to the phone ,
having to finish calls within 215 seconds , selling ‘products’ to customers, and dealing with rude people who were not able to manage their own finances .

I’ve taken on a part-time retirement cleaning job in an NHS building. I didn’t apply for it; I was offered it after volunteering in the same place.

I trained as a maths teacher.

Oh. What did you mean, then? Is the word veteran being used to refer to someone who used to do something but doesn’t any more?

Good to know if that’s becoming a common usage (or even if it’s uncommon usage).

MissAdventure that's good to hear. I know so many "professional" workers, I like to know there are others like me around. Call centres anyone?

I've worked in lots of kitchens.
Washing up, prepping food, and even cooking it at one point.
I've also done cleaning, and worked as a hospital hca.
(Jack of all trades, as they say)

Veteran just means "has a history of". I first heard it used this way when someone described themselves as a veteran competitive swimmer. It seems to have more dignity than words like firmer, old, ex-, etc.
