talking to the dogs...

(or "Paws for thoughts"!)

So, I live my myself, most of the time. I am in my fifties, still work three days a week (albeit from home) and make a lot of decisions routinely within the work role, so I would have said that I am mentally fairly robust and do not have any evidence of dementia (despite the usual memory lapses of losing glasses etc) BUT ......

..today I realised I have conversations with the dogs, and the siamese!
Now, to clarify, the conversations are very one-sided. I am not so far gone that I expect a reply, but did notice that I give the poor unassuming spaniels the benefit of a running commentary ....."shall we go in and have some lunch now then" "I think I am in need of a cup of tea" etc

Am I losing my marbles? ......does anyone else chat to the pets, or is it time to call the men in white?

Sorry, Nonu, CSL? Excuse my ignorance! Googled it and came up with:
A sofa chain store,
Chartered seat license,
Computer speech lab,
Chinese sign language,
C. S. Lewis

Somehow none seems applicable to my madness! grin

I had a chatty Siamese... on one occasion she looked me in the eye and said, quite clearly, "Marigold"... the rest of it was plain Cattish.

Charley, the Cairn, talked silently with his expressions... so I confess we (wife#2 and I) made up his dialogue for him. But you know things are not going well when you find yourself talking through the animal -- "I don't think Mummy's very pleased with us, Tiddles, do you?" sort of thing.

I talked baby-talk to my 'Baby Boy' cat this morning as he was sitting in the hall, only to discover later that it was my sports bag. I am always doing that, but the response is similar whether pet or inanimate object!

We all talk to our dogs here, and the dogs "talk" back. Each has a different accent, and approach to life, which reflects their personalities. Yes, I know ........ but it is increasingly good fun - perhaps I'll take to wearing purple

Thank you Tegan. That made me laugh; unheard of on a Monday morning!

I volunteer for the Childline Schools Service and when we are talking to the children about who they can talk to, about their problems, we often suggest a pet. If a child can tell their problems to a pet first it can help them to find the courage to tell a trusted adult. smile

My cat and I have quality time in the greenhouse. She curls up on the bench and I tell her what I'm potting up. We listen to Classic FM and the chickens join in. It's the only time we get away from the Jack Russells who are always hogging the limelight.

Just bred to run in flat races and not over jumps Envious. Usually don't have the stamina for long distance races either. Finding out more from my American racing chum.

I spend all day talking to my OH and get about as much response as I would from a dog - am I going mad too?!

To be fair to the lad, he does a good line in concentration - his mother did warn me when we were about to marry that if I spoke to him when he was reading, he would wait till he finished the sentence, place his finger on the last word and then look up at me - she was quite right!!

Tegan ...thank you so much.
I had not seen that clip for decades, and laughed so much because that could be my house......and I really don't know whether I should grin or sad about it.
One of my siamese teases the dogs all the time, and one of the dogs chases straight for the noise when the sound of claws being sharpened on furniture rings through the air!

Bedlam .... so perhaps it is no wonder that I talk to the rabble.

Tegan, you know so much about horses! flat bred, does that refer to the ground they are trained on? I was addicted to watching a live cam of puppies growing up that was on the web 24/7. sort of glad when they grew up and found homes.

LizG Sun 12-May-13 20:05:24

I talk to my dog all the time but worse than this I talk to dogs on Facebook as well smile

Tegan Sun 12-May-13 19:39:22

We'll be singing it for days now, won't we! Made me grow up wanting a cocker spaniel which was the first thing I did when I'd 'growed up'. By the way, Moltof came third [a very poor third]. Ex Nicky Henderson horse [may not have acclimatized yet, perhaps?] Seems to be a race for flat bred horses for some reason.

My favorite part of the movie Tegan! smile

Always chat to my dog and always have. He is my companion when I am here alone (which is not very often having a very busy home lol) Usually tell him the weather is bad when he wants to go out or how Im tired fed up etc. We dont go for walks anymore as he has a bad heart but is ok around the house and garden - he is 15 now.

Nanban Sun 12-May-13 18:50:46

You need a horse, horses talk all the time. I have Teddy, he understands me and I understand him.

petra Sun 12-May-13 18:30:40

It's got nothing to do with age; I was very close to my cats and many years ago my OH heard me asking one of them " what's the time Dolly"!

numberplease Sun 12-May-13 17:33:50

I`m always talking to the cat, but I get the feeling that she doesn`t think I say anything worth listening to!

yogagran Sun 12-May-13 16:12:15

I've been told that there's nothing to worry about as long as you know that you're doing it grin
