Illegal immigration - what to do?

The recent elections across Europe have highlighted the enormous problem of illegal immigration. So what can be done about it?
Some suggestions I have heard mentioned include:
1) sending illegals back to where they came from
2) ringfencing national borders with steel
3) denying illegals access to all but the minimum help necessary to maintain health and safety.
4) denying illegals access to benefits
5) setting up secure and humane holding areas where illegals can be detained
6) carrying out continuous and robust internal identity checks
7) actively liaising and working with other countries facing similar problems
8) encouraging the illegal's countries of origin to get their act together so as to discourage emigration (very difficult, that one)
And finally
9)making it obligatory for everybody to carry proper ID
Whilst some of these measures are already in force, I'm sure that the application of most of them would produce gasps of horror from many elements of the community. So, what are the alternatives? Any ideas, or do we just open the flood-gates and look the other way?

Links are either to bolster an arguement or just reflect that particular poster's views, so it's pointless.

Yes I should have cut and posted the last comment (not sure how to do that though blush
I could have just written "the Italians are having a terrible time with the immigrants" but I though the words of an actual Italian person carry more weight.
Rosesarered - add to your post: give extra information.

It's true that a part should be sent back to us in Italy, especially after it was discovered that our police do not identify those who do not want to stay in Italy.

Which it is absolutely insane!

At least half of the illegal immigrants arriving overland from Serbia and Greece.

The problem is that we can not repatriate these people because these people come across a country at war, Libya.

We should organize direct repatriation to their countries of origin such as Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Mali

We have already been convicted twice by the Hague court for both the period of detention in the CIE for both repatriation.

We asked what we should do and expect the answer yet.

Today we are at about 200,000 people.

Meanwhile, our cities are full of people who have nothing to eat or how to wash or sleep indoors and robberies and assaults is increasing every day.

Did I read Hungary is building a wall? Can this be right? And Durhamen you didn't post a link for ussmile

durhamjen Sun 16-Aug-15 18:43:46

I thought you would just be able to switch the television on without a link!
I do not know if Hungary have started building a wall, but they were talking about it.

durhamjen Sun 16-Aug-15 18:46:40

A four-metre high fence. They started last month.
Do you want a link to it? It'll be the Guardian.

Thanks for the reminder of the Songs of Praise programme. Only now read the post though, so DH is downloading the programme for me to see later.

Hungary is not the only country building a fence, Bulgaria is also building one.

Sons of praise from Calais. No one bothered to research this church. St Michael was Ethiopian orthodox, they didn't sing hymns. Whoops.

At least it wasn't Saint David.

durhamjen Tue 18-Aug-15 16:44:21

Anyway, I thought St Michael was the archangel, according to the catholic church.

I thought he was the patron saint of Marks & Spencer...

Here's an interesting idea.

Has anyone ever been to one of these ceremonies?

At least it wasn't Saint David.

What on earth (or in heaven) is wrong with St David, or Dewi Sant to give him his Welsh name?

A bit of a misnomer then, calling it 'Songs of Praise'.

Interesting comment by the Polish government (BBC news this morn.)
Yes, we will take migrants/refugees but, if you are not a Christian you will convert to Christianity. And some people think we are the nasty country.
