Thank you by text

A few weeks ago a friend gave me an earful about the evils of modern technology - how antisocial mobiles are etc etc, and how 'standards' are declining!! Since then I have not communicated with her by text. AIBU then, to be a bit miffed when I received a text from her saying thank you for a lovely evening ( after giving supper). I love my mobile and I pad, but after going to someone's house for a meal, I always ring the following day, or send a little card if I don't know them very well. Any thoughts?

I think a text is fine. Bit rich when she herself is openly anti-technology though! grin

I think a thank you text is fine, too. DD and I often communicate by text because a phone call is often hard to time to be convenient to both parties!

TBH sending a card seems rather old-fashioned these days, although I know it's the height of good manners (or was).

Ana I wouldn't expect a formal thank you from my family least of all from daughters!

What does card cost + postage.

A TXT surely would suffice.

I would text a thank you too,

I have sent an e card in the past. There are lots of designs, they are free and surely nobody could be offended.

Of course not to family members, Atqui! That wasn't what I meant smile

I would text too unless it was someone I didn't know particularly well then I'd send a little card.

I think a text is the norm these days in so far as anyone thanks you at all but I would still send a card if someone had cooked me a nice meal unless its my sister and I always take her flowers and a pile of chocolate and she does the same to me and we are happy with this.

I would send a card for a really special occasion like a wedding or Ruby Wedding party.
If it's just supper at a friend's house a text is fine.
We often have dinner at DDs on a Sunday night or she and SiL come to us. We always text each other to say thanks. SiL is an amazing cook ;)

Atqui maybe your friend had 'heard what you said' re technology and social media. smile

I think times have moved on, so texting is perfectly acceptable these days.
Quick, easy and fun.

Texting is a friendly, easy way of saying thanks. It's also something young people do all the time.

Nonu Wed 15-Oct-14 19:19:07

I think texting is best thing since sliced bread .

smile

rockgran Wed 15-Oct-14 19:21:07

I think texting is fine - the main thing is the thankyou!

Lona Wed 15-Oct-14 19:21:33

Nonu!! We've missed you, smile

Nonu Wed 15-Oct-14 19:31:10

Thank you LONA that is a nice message , I will be returning soon, next couple of days in fact.

Today is my birthday, so we are celebrating it over here with a Vietnamese "PHO", which I always enjoy so much, then maybe some wine to finish the evening.
[Sunshine] & smile to all

Interesting to read all your comments, but my point was that this particular person thinks mobile phones are antisocial etc, but Jane perhaps, you are right- she may have reconsidered!!! Though personally I still like to make a phone call.

Atqui Wed 15-Oct-14 19:37:23

So perhaps I'm not as up to,date as I think(smile)

Atqui Wed 15-Oct-14 19:38:17

Oh obviously not as the emoticon didn't work!!

FlicketyB Wed 15-Oct-14 19:43:00

I prefer an email. I can put in the full text I would put on a card. A text strikes me as being a bit offhand.

specki4eyes Wed 15-Oct-14 22:09:18

I always send an email now - its more easy to get the right tone, which always depends on the relationship. And I do thank my (adult) children - they make an effort - they deserve a proper thank you.

Texting is too casual, in my opinion but its better than nothing at all. Some people seem to think that saying thank you as they leave is sufficient but isnt it satisfying to receive a few words the next day or so?

Anya Wed 15-Oct-14 22:45:43

Texts are fine and I often text a thank you the same night, or if too late, first thing next morning. If it was someone I don't get the chance to see often I might follow up with an email in a few days.

Atqui grin at your failed emoticon!

Eloethan Thu 16-Oct-14 01:43:44

I think as long as someone says thank you, by whatever means, that's OK.

Perhaps your friend was referring to what I think is the anti-social practice of having unnecessary conversations on mobile phones, or constantly fiddling with/checking them, when in company.

maxgran Thu 16-Oct-14 13:17:31

If I go to dinner with anyone - I thank them before I leave. Is there any point in doing it again, by any means, the next day?

Mind you I don't go to formal dinners - just to friends and family.
