Please ,please, posters read your post and correct before pressing the send button.

That scourge of the Devil always wants to autocorrect.

Get thee behind me Satan.

But my iPad loves them vampirequeen!! And inserts them whenever it feels they're necessary and often when they're not!

Anniebach Mon 24-Apr-17 09:15:16

Trying typing in Welsh place names ?

MawBroon Mon 24-Apr-17 09:16:15

Oh but it does anniebach
givingbtoo much attention to details or formal rules (as in grammar!)

MawBroon Mon 24-Apr-17 09:17:03

And that's another thing , why does my iPad insert "b"s everywhere???

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Apr-17 09:53:42

Like merlotgran, if I preview I sometimes lose my post and have to start again.
And I love split infinitives.

Anyway, anniebach here goes:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogeryllgwyndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

no, I know, but I tried grin

I don't know why my friends and I tried to learn to say it when we were at school - someone sent us a postcard from there when they went on holiday and we spent ages trying to learn it.

Anniebach Mon 24-Apr-17 10:00:10

Thank you MaWBroon ?

Jalima, stick to Llanfair P G, we do grin

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Apr-17 10:02:21

It's not so much fun though!

In the meantime I will boldly go where no man has gone before.
(to see to the washing machine which is beeping).

I once corrected another poster (on another forum) blush, I was new to forums and was unprepared for the flying vitriol , had to leave and am now super sensitive to typos ................ but only other peoples wink

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Apr-17 10:23:10

other people's

[ducks and runs for cover]
sorry aggie couldn't resist
wink

Typos and auto-corrects are usually obvious and don't bother me, neither do the kind of things that dyslexia produces. Using a spot of common sense makes the meaning clear.
What does make me itch to correct a post is the use of a word which is slightly similar to the right one but gives a completely different meaning to what the poster intended. Sometimes it seems that the poster is not aware that there are two words to become confused over, so I wonder whether they themselves are taking the wrong meaning out of other posts. That could lead to a lot of misunderstanding.

aggie Mon 24-Apr-17 11:57:20

Oops !

aggie Mon 24-Apr-17 11:58:55

My pet hate is using the word draw for the place you keep things in , and I am no use with apostrophe use sad

aggie Mon 24-Apr-17 12:00:01

I didn't know whether to add an s with or without

sue1169 Mon 24-Apr-17 12:22:50

.....some things matter...some things dont...?

Anniebach Mon 24-Apr-17 12:31:17

I couldn't care less, I do care about people being ridiculed by pointing out their grammatical and or spelling errors

Elegran Mon 24-Apr-17 12:33:28

aggie I have to stop and think with its and it's, so if I am in a hurry I try to avoid them both.

The logic behind them is that it's is a shortened form of it is (like I'm and he's and we're and they're) and its is possession, but it doesn't need the apostrophe because it already has the possessiveness built-in (like my, his, her, our, your, their)

If in your mind you can bracket it's with I'm and he's, and bracket its with my and your, it may be easier. (but it's yet another thing to remember when you are busy typing!)

The other punctuation that catches me out is the colon : and the semicolon : so I avoid them too, if I can.

POGS Mon 24-Apr-17 13:07:39

What makes me smile is when a poster 'chastises' another for not using the correct spelling or punctuation then go on and do the exact same. Idiots.

The biggest problem is the obvious case of a poster 'trying to look clever' but nobody is fooled as to their intent which is 'usually' to try and belittle a poster that has not agreed with them.

mcem Mon 24-Apr-17 13:29:39

My only serious concern is on the relatively rare occasion when a post is so badly put together that I really can't understand it.

kittylester Mon 24-Apr-17 14:23:48

I think that's winewine mcem. grin

Maw, my phone inserts 'v' and I think it's fat finger syndrome (sorry) as those letters are just above the space bar.

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Apr-17 14:26:58

sorry aggie
hope you took it in good part smile
[help]

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Apr-17 14:28:27

perhaps it was all the rest of us wink

Ana Mon 24-Apr-17 14:56:30

Long posts not split into paragraphs put me off. So much easier to read in smaller chunks!

annodomini Mon 24-Apr-17 15:29:26

That's true, Ana. The shiny new GCSE English syllabus wouldn't put up with that!

TriciaF Mon 24-Apr-17 16:03:53

I agree 100% with that, Ana. I don't even bother to read them.

aggie Mon 24-Apr-17 16:55:11

Jalima , I have grown a skin by now smile
