There have been some interesting discussions of the rise of transgender as an issue on Gransnet and I've been very grateful to those who have brought this to my and others' attention. I was surprised to see this Guardian article about Mumsnet bringing in tougher rules about debating transgender as a result of complaints.

Mumsnet brings in tougher forum rules after transgender row

I'm quite disturbed by the whole business. Not that a few people might feel they've been born into the wrong body but how this has been politicised and broadened into a massive movement affecting young people before they have sufficient maturity to really know themselves. Also that legislation is being passed with vast swathes of the country having little idea.
I hope the Gransnet moderators are not considering similar gagging of posters.

I just had to Google cis - so a cis woman is a woman! Agree about the balls!

This issue was commented on by a couple of ladies at my local gym.
I have to say I know little about this but the thought that I would be naked after showering and a transman sat looking at me fills me with horror.

My feeling on this is more of a question. When does a man, who feels that he is a woman, get to call himself a woman? Is it when he makes up his mind? Is it when he begins to dress as a woman? Is it when he has begun hormone therapy? Is it when he has had “top” surgery? Is it when he has had “bottom” surgery?
Whereas a man who has lived and breathed is his chosen gender and had all medical treatments to achieve that chosen gender is one thing, a man who wakes up one morning and asks that the world treat him as a woman, with all the protected areas open to access, that is completely another.
We are already seeing unscrupulous individuals insisting that they are treated as women; gaining access to women’s prisons, access to female sporting events (and winning) access to women only jobs. Where does this end?

If you were born with XY chromosomes you are male.

If you were born with XX chromosomes you are female.

These facts will not change regardless of how many hormones are pumped into these people, or how much their bodies have been mutilated by surgery.

There is nothing wrong with the body of those who may at some point feel they are 'trapped in the wrong sex'.

The problem clearly lies in the mind, so the treatment therefore should be of a psychiatric nature.
