Is GN getting too intrusive?

Opened GN this afternoonto find a large pop up message basically asking for consent for access to my device and all other devices in my household for advertising purposes, some I could block and some I couldn’t. I wasn’t able to bypass the pop up , I had to consent or not be allowed onto this site.
I don’t want GN to have access to my data or my family’s , I don’t mind the cookie as it lets me into GN without having to log in each time.
However I haven’t been given a choice, this means that I put up with it or I leave, I don’t want to do either.
I have attached some screen shots of the pop up message.(i might have used a photo twice! But last time I went back out of preview I lost the whole thing). Of course GN might delete this before anyone reads it. It’s annoying but this might be goodbye from me...... have you all had this message and hat have you decided to do about it? Are you happy for GN or their advertisers to be able to read every click on a website or App that you have in your home? I’m not.

EDIT by GNHQ: Please see more info on the new consent form here

Absolutely not!

Considering leaving.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 13:52:41

Hasn’t everyone had this message today then?

lemongrove Fri 14-Aug-20 13:55:32

I would prefer not ( had to agree to get onto the site) but you know, so many already have access to what you are looking at on your devices, which is why ads constantly pop up for something that you have viewed or bought already. It’s so that the advertisers can target you ( and they pay the bills for sites such as this.)

It would have been nice for GN Admin to put a post up explaining that we should expect this, and the reasons and implications.

MaizieD Fri 14-Aug-20 13:56:21

Isn't it an extension of the 'I accept cookies' pop up?

I went through it, there are several 'consents' asked for and they are all set to 'no consent'; you have to actively consent to most of them.

Considering I'm now being followed around by ads for a clothes site I looked at yesterday I really don't see that there's much to be done to stop this, bar using incognito windows for browsing.

Hi WwMk2 grin It feels like long time no see...

westendgirl Fri 14-Aug-20 13:57:16

Yes I had the message too and am also thinking about leaving.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 13:58:26

No, not all are allowed to be agreed or not, my iPad is set to the highest privacy levels, hence I don’t get any adverts on this site, unless I disable the setting.

I think that this was sneaked in and I wasn’t given any option but to consent.

And I’m still dithering about it.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:00:01

The very first pic I put on is an automatic consent not an option, remember this is the whole of your device not just whilst you are on here.

I wonder if mumsnet has the same message, and what they think about it (as they seem to have more of a voice with HQ)?

Not happy.
Our local newspaper is sponsored by so many ads now all around the main story it is really hard to read and concentrate.
Is that what gn will become like? Sorry to be negative.

MaizieD Fri 14-Aug-20 14:03:02

Should we put this on 'Site Stuff'?

Then Gnet might respond and explain what it's all about.

Bellanonna Fri 14-Aug-20 14:03:50

Beside the “Consent” button was one saying “Manage Options”
I looked through most of those and one question was “What happens if I don’t consent?” I cannot now remember the actual answer but it seemed to imply that nothing would happen. However I couldn’t see an option anywhere to refuse consent so I suppose the only alternative would be to leave the site fir good.

GNHQ should certainly have warned us about this. Given us a chance to at least be prepared for it rather than sticking up a notice blocking our access unless we agreed. Blunt, crass, rude.

Have we had any ads for brands of tea yet?
PG Tips? Yorkshire? Earl Grey - also delicious cold. brew

Puzzler61 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:10:14

Before anyone pulls any plugs MawB can I ask “How is Hattie dog now?”

lemongrove Fri 14-Aug-20 14:11:45

Haha ?not as yet.....but it can only be a matter of time.

BlueBelle Fri 14-Aug-20 14:13:21

I had the message and ticked no to everything

Starblaze Fri 14-Aug-20 14:15:44

This is the same for most websites and apps, it's just that gransnet has made it easier to understand and opt out than most

Peardrop50 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:18:05

I just went through the list, didn't select any of the options and submitted.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:20:54

Bluebell you should have looked harder , if you had scrolled down there were some ( one is a screen print on my OP) that had no select switch for yes or no, it was pre selected as consent.

LaRia44 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:22:30

I had that pop up. I didn’t consent to anything. I moved all the buttons to not allow anything. I fully expected to not be able to access GN, here I am. I’m using an iPad, not sure if that makes a difference.

Grannybags Fri 14-Aug-20 14:24:59

I had the message.

I assumed if the 'dot' was grey it meant no and if you changed it to blue it meant you agreed.

I left them all grey

Exactly what LaRia44 said, except I am using a MacBook.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:25:40

Some did not have an option!!

Didn’t everyone read this blasted message properly?

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 14-Aug-20 14:27:35

Anyway, I’m about to flounce off.
It’s a shame as I will miss GN but not enough to have my every keyboard click monitored and collected.

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 14:35:30

Yes, I've just had the message too and said no to most options but had to consent by default to the last questions.
Too much intrusion into our lives, it is frightening.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, Oopsadaisy, but does anyone know how to get rid of Pinterest? I stupidly followed a link and seem to have joined but can't find out how to even log out! I really dislike it.
